Maya's POV
It had been five months since school started. It was definitely weird in August when at the very end of sophomore year Lucas had broke up with Riley and before anyone could adjust to the difference, summer was here and everyone was out of town. So it was a shock that when we managed to finally get together on the fifth week of school on the weekend when everyone learned about my visit with Riley and how much she's changed. We didn't expect it to be that drastic.
Thankfully, after all the holiday breaks, things had finally gotten back to a new normal. Christmas had passed and New years was right around the corner. Lucas pulled up in my apartments parking lot to take me to school.
"Good morning Pancake." He smiled.
"Good morning Ranger Rick. Hey Zay. " I smiled hopping into gunshot greeting both boys.
"Okay, I need a nickname or something, I feel left out." Zay chirped from the back seat.
"You have a nickname, flat butt." Lucas smirked pulling out of the parking lot
"Well I want a different one, freak. "
"Ok. What do you think it should be?" Lucas asked.
"I don't know, that's why I'm asking Maya!"
"Why me?" I laughed turning to face him.
"You made all of BuckyMc' Boing Boing's names."
"Yeah that doesn't sound right coming from you." Lucas cringed.
"Their all Texas based Zay, I can't do that for two people." I shrugged.
"What was the nickname you called me in Texas with Vanessa?"I smiled as I remembered what he was talking about and made a sarcastic scoff.
"Call me honey nugget." He smiled.
"Hi honey nugget."
"Hi hunkalicous." He responded.
"Yeah...I don't know." Lucas said slowly.
"Nah man, we switched, I'm honey nugget and she's hunkalicous." Zay smiled.
"Yeah it's more accurate."Zay's face dropped in fake hurt.
"Hey!"
"It's true!"
"Yeah but you don't gotta say it. You got me all messed up!" He pouted playfully.
"Sorry honey nugget." I smiled.
"No problem hunkalicous."
"You two are weird." Lucas laughed.
"Thank you." We both responded."How was your weekend Huckleberry?" I asked.
"Boring. It would've been better if someone responded to my text though." Lucas responded flashing Zay a look through the mirror.
"I told you man my phone was at the shop!"
"Wait, but we played one of those snap games on Saturday." I reminded Zay.
"Dude!" Lucas laughed with a smile, not taking any of this seriously. The three of us always played around like this. Our fun laid back normal.
"Snapchat," Zay corrected. "I have that on my tablet, not my number."
"Coulda texted me this morning." Lucas joked.Zay pulled out his phone and a second later Lucas had a text. He went to pick his phone off the counsel and I grabbed his hand with the phone in it.
"No distracted driving." I reminded him.
"Right, sorry. Not funny Zay!" Lucas smiled.
"Yet your still laughing." Zay nodded smugly.
"Can you blame me? Your face is hilarious." Lucas joked.Another faked look of hurt from Zay.
Lucas let his phone slip out of his hand and laced his with mine, thinking I wouldn't notice. But I did."You know you should be nicer to me before I have my best friend kick your butt, Freak." Zay smirked.
"I am your best friend?" Lucas asked.
"Nah man, that's Maya."
"Yeah Ranger Rick." I smiled using my free hand fake punch his cheek lightly.
"Dude!" Lucas complained.
"I said she's my best friend, your my bff." Zay smiled.
"Nice save." I laughed.Luca's hand started to slip away, since I didn't acknowledge it and he thought I didn't notice. I did. And I didn't mind. I gave his hand a squeeze and he tightened his grip on my hand and continued the drive to school with a smile on his face.
