CHAPTER 1
Standing silently on deck, Rizpah stared out onto the dark waters of the ocean. She let out a defeated sigh. "How could it have come to this?" she thought quietly to herself. "What am I even doing on this godforsaken ship bound for London? What am I going to do when I get there?" She sighed again. The wind blew her heavy, golden-white tresses into her eyes. She testily pushed them back as she turned around to go back to her cabin. Her eyes landed on a couple of crew members who had been staring at her. WHAT? She challenged them with her eyes. They quickly lifted their eyes from her and pretended interest in other things. She quickly walked down and went under deck.
Entering her dank room, she thought of John, her betrothed. She thought of the last time she had spoken to him....

It had been at a ball hosted by the Duke and Duchess of County Harbor. It was filled with prideful, handsome lords and stuck-up, pretty ladies. Rizpah had been one of those ladies, but she was worried. John had not shown up and it was well over one hour that he should have arrived.
Suddenly, she heard the frantic galloping of a horse and the worried shouts of a man. "Quick! We need a doctor.
"What is it? What has happened" the Duchess asked. Concern etched in her serene face. "It's John Calgary", the rider answered, still breathless, "He was ambushed by the rebels and has been shot in the stomach. Please! He needs a doctor, now!
Oh no...
