"TOBIO-CHAN I SWEAR ON EVERYTHING THAT YOU HOLD DEAR YOU BETTER NOT HAVE STOLEN MY DIARY!"
Ah yes. The tranquil sound of a middle school friendship. Let's take it back a bit, shall we?
L/n Y/n is Kitagawa Daiichi's first year queen. In each of the grades a king and a queen are set by their grades, athleticism, looks, and in a prestigious school like this, money. Why would such a middle school do a thing so seemingly petty? Because even when you're at the top, a new social order will brew beneath the surface.
There will always be a ladder. No matter how you resist, you'll fall under a class.
What made Y/n special was a strange thing in itself. Instead of popularity and such swarming her, she preferred very few to be close to her. Rather than being the most athletic and stamina filled of her classmates, she only chose to dance.
What set her apart was her voice. Oh, the voice sweeter than a thousand honeysuckle, clearer than a purified stream. She would often sing the school song during morning assembly and it was undeniable that she had a talent above anything you'd have seen.
While her beauty was a softer yet stable and constant glow, Kageyama Tobio, the king of first year would be a innocent light that still somehow gleamed bright as a star.
His talents were an extreme genius level in the game known as volleyball. From the way he'd analyze the best possible options while handling the ball just right, it was clear that he would rise to be a star. With his soft black hair and skin still clear as a baby's, he almost seemed too good to be true.
His grades were just average though, so he did have flaws.
Anyways, these two were the two top most and well respected students of the first year. It was to be expected they grow close, well obvious to everyone but them. They respected each other and greeted each other often, but their relationship had stayed for the longest time, acquaintances.
Y/n was the girl who didn't understand well the constructs of social hierarchy. Maybe that was why instead of sitting beside the richest girls who always saved her a seat, she ate alone beside the corner of the vending machines. Maybe she never took any confessions from guys in her year or year above even because she didn't understand what they meant.
All she knew was that at this school, she'd have anything she wanted. Well, if she wanted anything.
Now both Kageyama and Y/n were a cut above everyone else, but there were the people in the middle, who were only really there to make people like them look better.
Two of these people were Kindaichi Yutaro, and Kunimi Akira.
There literally is no significance to them whatsoever, in fact I only mention them now because they happen to be on the same team with Kageyama, and they'll matter later.
Kindaichi happened to really like Y/n, and was convinced that one day she'd be an idol with tons of fans. In a way, he was like a fanboy to her. In fact, he'd found her YouTube channel by accident where she posted all sorts of covers, and was extremely surprised to see how low the view count was. Anyway, he subscribed. Homeboy loves her music, that's simple enough.
Kunimi, not so much. Also not a fan of the social construct, though since he didn't have the support of being the top this boy had shown dislike at once. Pouty boy.
So the day Kunimi wanted a juice, that very day which would change his life forever, was something to be remembered well.
"Oi, Kindaichi. I'm gonna get a juice, want one?"
The other boy was listening to something intently, eyes sparkling at every move the figure on his screen did. I'll take that as a no.
He walked out of the classroom filled which chatter and continued down the hall to his left until he reached the end, then turned right. There, sitting down humming to herself was the queen. Of his grade.
Kunimi coughed, and instantly the girl flinched in a startled shock. "I'm so sorry, didn't see you there."
She shot up instantly and almost tripped over her feet, but caught herself in time.
He walked past her to click the buttons for a juice, and low and behold, it fell. When it was going down, it hit this other drink which had been hanging off the edge so instead of one drink, two came out.
Kunimi picked up the two and walked away, not sparing the girl a second glance. Of course, it confused her.
"Wait a second, you don't know me?" She asked, bewildered. "Don't want to tell me anything?"
"I know of you, but not really. My friend is a fan I think but I don't remember." His tone so casual and blatantly showing that he didn't care about her was stunning. Imagine having someone who didn't care about Y/n. Impossible, right?
"Um... I didn't catch your name?"
This girl really can't take a hint, can she? "It's Kunimi Akira."
"Okay Kunimi-kun! See you around?"
He turned and seeing her bright eyes and waiting smile, he couldn't help but smile just a bit himself. "Yeah. You too."
So he left, walking back to his class with a flutter in his chest. That's the first time in a while someone payed me full attention, right?
While Y/N got up after he left and searched instantly on social media "Kunimi Akira" with connections to people who followed her (because of the mention of his friend). When the bell rang she hadn't even come close to clues of any online existence and she drew two conclusions.
One, he didn't have social media. Or two, she had too many followers to pick apart someone indirectly.
With a sigh, she headed back to the class where her empty desk next to a snoring blueberry-eyed boy stood.
Kunimi Akira. She chanted in her head. Kunimi Akira, Kunimi Akira, Kunimi Akira, Kunimi Ak-
"L/N Y/N! You usually perform so well it's disappointing you're not paying attention. Now the answer to the question?" The teacher glared over her metal rimmed glasses.
"Kunimi- I mean 'Let's see the country' " (The inner quote was english)
"Okay... Just focus more next time."
Kageyama had woken up when Y/n spoke. And he'd heard the familiar name.
