"what the fuck, you're so old!"
doug yelled right after everyone finished singing happy birthday to ariana, making the group laugh.
it wasn't a huge event, seeing as ariana was still on tour and had just gotten off stage when her closest friends and tour crew had surprised her.
"i love you all so much! thank you for this." ariana was on the verge of tears by the time she finished thanking everyone. shawn hugged her from behind and kissed her cheek sweetly, making her giggle. though she soon became uncomfortable when she briefly locked eyes with harry, who was on the other side of the room talking to troye and mikey.
harry's smile faded the second he noticed shawn's arms around ariana. the sight of shawn kissing her and whispering in her ear made him sick. he wasn't trying to be arrogant but he truly didn't understand what shawn had that he didn't.
"ugh look at them." troye said under his breath to mikey, who just nodded. they wanted their friend to be happy but deep down, they were both rooting for harry, even if mikey had suggested dating shawn, he didn't think ariana would actually do it. he figured it'd push her to realize her feelings for harry. his plan had completely backfired though.
"harry, you okay dude?" mikey asked, noticing how quiet he'd gotten. harry excused himself and left to get some air, hoping ariana would follow him outside and of course, she did.
"hey... what're you up to?" ariana asked softly, she almost sounded scared. harry didn't turn to look at her, mainly because he knew he'd do something stupid and wrong if he looked into her eyes.
"harry... please talk to me." ariana wasn't ready to let harry go. she loved spending time with him, she loved everything about him. she knew expecting him to be her friend when she was romantically involved with shawn was selfish, but she didn't care. she wanted harry in her life.
"i don't want to talk, ariana. i can think of a million things i want to do with you, but talking isn't one of them." his voice was deeper than usual, almost dark. ariana bit her lip, trying to decide whether she should leave him alone or not. she knew she should've let it go, but of course she didn't.
"i'm sorry. i didn't mean to hurt you."
harry finally turned around and tried to find words to say that would explain how he was feeling, but there wasn't any. ariana waited anxiously, knowing he was probably gonna tell her to go to hell, but he didn't. in fact, he did quite the opposite.
harry caressed her cheek and grabbed her waist with his other hand, bringing her closer to him until their noses were almost touching. he slowly brought his lips to hers, silently asking for permission, and ariana didn't stop him. the kiss was soft, but full of passion, and neither of them wanted to pull away. harry savored every millisecond of it, knowing it was probably gonna be his only chance to kiss her. he was the first to pull away and he sighed when he realized ariana regretted the kiss.
"i can't do this, i'm sorry."
and before harry could even try to reason with her, get her to stay, ariana was already gone, leaving a very heartbroken harry behind.
