Shadows in the Dark

The train ride was uneventful, a sudden rain storm sprung some time around one in the morning. I had my own train car, and to be honest, the silence was amazing. No one to bother me, no one to snore their ass off and annoy me. No one to do anything to me. Perfect.

My green hammock swung rhythmically with the train cars rocking back and forth on the tracks. There was two doors the conjoined my car to the car behind me that carried our animals, and the car in front of me was filled with our trapeze artists and our stunters.

On my far left was a wall-mounted mirror and vanity, and in the far left corner next to the door was couple of my trunks filled with my things.

I wake up to the sound of the rain hitting my window. I rub my eyes, and hop out of my hammock. At first I'm struggling to find my balance.

How fast are we going? I first thought.

I walk slowly to my vanity, my heels thudding against the wood flooring of the car.

My hair was a little messy, so I grabbed my nearest brush that as on a nearby box and brushed it.

After brushing my hair, I returned my brush back to its spot. A sudden knock on my door from the trapeze car caught me off-guard.

"Come in." I muttered, rubbing my temples.

It was J.

"Hey." He said flatly, closing the door behind him.

"Shouldn't you be sleeping?" I chuckled, walking back near my hammock.

"I would say the same thing to you, but you're my boss." He chuckled, ruffling his hair.  "Yup, that's what you get for being a boss. No sleep." I laughed, rubbing my sleepy eyes.

"Yeah, so what are we doing for our performance?" J asked, stepping a little closer to me.

"We'll talk about that when we are in The Ring, and we'll practice what we are doing for a few days." I patted his shoulder, smiling at him.

"You know, you've got a very pretty smile." He said warmly, ruffling his hair yet again.

His voice wasn't cold anymore,  and this caught me off-guard. It was almost unsettling.

"Okay, ass kissing won't get you anywhere. Now what do you want?" I snort, taking out my phone and opening my messages.

"Nothing, and I'm not ass kissing Abbs." He said defensively.

"Abbs? Seriously?" I wheezed.

"It's my personal nickname for you, and I'm not even lying about your smile. It's very pretty, you know." He repeated.

" Well shit, uh thanks. I wish I had a good nickname for you." I looked up from my phone and stared into his eyes.

"Right, since my name is only one letter long, it's not like I'm giving you much to work with." He  joked.

"How about. . .Legs?" As soon as I said it, we both started wheezing. And I almost drop my phone from laughing so hard.

"Legs? Oh mah god Abbs, I see where your coming from but really?" He rubbed a tear from his face, finally calming down.

"What, your tall, and Legs would fit you." I reasoned.

"Fine, Legs it is." He hugged me, which again, stopped my heart dead in its tracks. Sitting there awkwardly, I returned the hug.

"Goodnight, Legs." I chuckled, turning off my phone and tried to fall asleep.

"'Night Abbs, see you tomorrow morning." He whispered, closing the door behind him.
