the soft glow of the television cast flickering shadows around the room, the only light cutting through the deep, cozy dimness of jake and aera's living room. the air smelled like chocolate chips and warmth, a comfort that was lost on sunghoon as he sat stiffly, his shoulders tensing with every creak the house made.
sunghoon tore his eyes from the screen for a second, his gaze landing on the plate of cookies that aera had lovingly (angrily) baked earlier. he'd thought the sugar rush might distract him from the horror flick jake had chosen, but all it had done was make him more jittery. he felt the sugar in his veins like a ticking time bomb of nerves.
"you know" jake said, casually lounging back against the couch almost arrogantly. "i bet if we were in this movie, you'd be the guy who dies first. you just have that vibe."
sunghoon shot him a glare, but his hands trembled slightly as he adjusted his blanket. "shut up. like you'd last any longer. you'd probably trip over your own ego."
"nah, i'd be the guy who hooks up with the hot girl before she gets offed" jake replied with a confident smirk, glancing at aera as if expecting some kind of reaction. she rolled her eyes, unimpressed, while sunghoon snorted in disbelief. aera tossed a crumpled napkin at jake with a half-hearted scowl. "classy, real classy."
but jake wasn't done. and sunghoon, despite the mounting terror gnawing at his gut, couldn't resist the urge to banter. he needed something to ground him, to make this ridiculous movie feel less real. "dude, the way you flirt would scare off any evil presence"
"oh, please." jake leaned back, grinning like he had all the time in the world. "i've got moves. you'd be the one getting freaked out by a creaky door, screaming for backup."
"i don't scream" sunghoon muttered defensively, his ears burning at the memory of a very unfortunate raccoon encounter last fall.
"yeah, right" jake teased, mischief dancing in his eyes. "remember that time you thought a raccoon was a burglar?"
