We Missed You

The small castle was beaming with life, as Raven and Carlos awoke.

Carlos wanted to be comfortable as he had been through a lot, so he wore a very casual outfit leaving his leather behind for the moment. He wore a red, black, and white zipper hoodie, over a white t-shirt with "Bad Apple" written on it in red letters; black distressed shorts; and black, red, and white punk style sneakers with silver spikes.

Raven did the same; wearing a light and comfortable ensemble. She wore an olive green, satin, spaghetti strap, camisole, a light flowing skirt in matching green; and black boots. She adorned her neck with the necklace from Carlos. Her hair was in her traditional half-up style, fastened with a hair clip shaped like a black bird.

They could hear the little VKs, running around and laughing. Apparently, the night had been quiet and there was no sign of Pan or Michael.

Raven was greeted by Jay and Doug and Evie, when she and Carlos exited the room. Raven was still feeling a little sore from her fall and from being carried for miles, but her headache had subsided from the effects of the RVW flowers.

Jay picked up the pixie and swung her around, earning a warning from Carlos to be careful.

"I'm fine, Carlos." Raven reassured him, chuckling, after Jay set her down.

"Yeah, relax man. She's tough." Jay countered.

"She's injured." Corrected Carlos.

Jay looked concerned.

"Oh, stop freaking everyone out, Isle Boy. I'm just a little bruised. I'll live." She gently scolded her boyfriend.

Raven ran over to Evie and received a gentle hug.

"Don't disappear again!" Evie ordered.

"Yes ma'am, I won't do it again." Raven joked.

"DOUG!" Raven gasped, and ran to him with open arms.

Doug clapped her into a hug, and squeezed her a little tighter.

"Pain in the ass, little sprite." He mumbled lowly in her ear.

Raven pulled away to face him, and smiled apologetically.

"You know? I haven't had one decent argument, with you gone. Can you try to stay out of trouble for at least the next week or so?" He chided his best friend, lightly.

"No promises." Raven chuckled, hugging him a second time.

Hartley was watching the friends, and the entire institution was still foreign to her.

Curiouser, and curiouser, she thought to herself.

She walked over to Carlos, who was still standing by the bedroom door.

"Those two look--close. Trouble in paradise?" Hartley challenged, in jest, in reference to Raven and Doug's exchange.

"No," he scoffed, rolling his eyes. "Doug's with Evie, but he's Raven's best friend."

"That bad-ass pixie and that geeky little AK are best friends?" Hartley asked, incredulously.

Carlos looked at her confused.

"Just because I don't like her, doesn't mean she's not a bad-ass." Hartley clarified.

"It's the book worm bond, I guess. They're both freakishly smart." Carlos deduced, "Don't ask... none of us really understand it either." Carlos chuckled. "Raven made up her mind one day that he was her best friend, and that was the end of it. She does that."

"How did he land a stunning, hard-core girl, like Evie?" Hartley wondered aloud.

"Hell, if I know." He chortled. "Doug likes to joke that he's the secret glue that holds us all together. We laugh about it, but strangely it's kind of true." Carlos replied, with a shrug.

"I'll never understand the world outside of the barrier." She muttered.

"You learn to just go with it." Shrugged Carlos, with a chuckle.

"They all seem to like her." She deduced, trying to understand.

"Raven's stubborn, a know-it-all, and a sarcastic pain in the ass; and she makes a bad enemy, but she makes an ever better friend. We're all like a family," Carlos explained. "Strange, and sometimes dysfunctional, but a family, nonetheless."

"Except, Harry and Gil. They're like the weird cousins you hope will never call." He added, jokingly.

"I'm beginning to see that." Hartley replied.

Hartley watched them all. Evie was like the nurturing mother, Mal was the cool and edgy, big sister. Jay was the funny big brother who liked to mess with his younger siblings, and Ben was the sweet supportive other big brother. Carlos was the nerdy little brother and Raven was the spunky little sister. And, apparently Doug was the glue. It was different, but it worked somehow.

"Carlos?" Raven called him over to her, "Who's been taking care of Tootles?"

Oh, crap! I forgot about the stupid bird, thought Carlos.

"Uh... " He stammered.

"Tell me someone's been checking on him." She whined, uncharacteristically.

"He's fine, Raven. He can hunt on his own." Carlos reassured.

"Well, I have to go make sure." She determined.

"She's kidding, right?" Mal interjected.

"We're all here to protect each other, and the castle is covered in protection spells and alarms. A bird is not exactly our priority!" Ben argued.

"Besides, he hates us." Jay added.

"No, he's just wild." Raven corrected.

"He doesn't hate me." Harry chimed in,  being glib.

"Or me." Added Hartley.

"Why am I not surprised?" Scoffed Doug.

"Harry, can you check on him?" Asked Raven, with doe eyes.

"Fine, Shayla. Fine. I'll go get the bloody bird." Harrumphed Harry.

"I'll go too, I need to get some air." Said Hartley.

"Hey. Don't fuck up my door again!" Warned Carlos quietly to Harry, so the little VKs didn't hear.

"No promises, wee pup." Chuckled Harry.

Raven looked confused.

"The door got into a fight with a hook when it wouldn't open. The hook won." Explained Doug.

"Ahh." Nodded Raven, understanding.

"Raven, I'm sorry, but your bird is kind of a dick." Jay commented.

"So are you, but we keep you around." She countered.

Carlos snickered.

"We missed you, Raven." Laughed Jay.
