Avengers Compound:

Steve walked over to the counter and picked up the ring and chain.

"Buck? What's this?" He asked with a raised eyebrow.

Bucky rubbed the back of his neck.

"Well i-" he trailed off.

How did he tell Steve? Tell him he'd betrayed his trust. Tell him he'd gone after the one girl that was off limits. How did he tell his best friend that he dated and had been engaged to his little sister?

"Well you what?"

Steve's face was serious.

Natasha entered the room, spotting the interaction, she stopped.

"What's happening?" Nat asked

"Alison saw James." Clint said "Outed him about something to Steve and now Steve's trying to get an answer from him."

Nat's attention went back to the two men.

"Bucky, what's with the ring?" He asked again.

Bucky sighed.

"It's her engagement ring." He admitted. "We were dating for months before I left for Germany, I proposed to her right before I deployed."

Steve's look of confusion turned to one of anger.

"My sister?" He said, his voice low "of all the girls in brooklyn, you chose my sister."

"Steve it's not like that I-"

"The one girl I asked you to stay away from and you couldn't do it?"

"Steve,"

"I'm gonna kill you."

"Can I help?" Tony asked playfully as he entered the room

"Stark, uh uh, wrong time." Clint said

Tony gave a confused look in response.

  "Punk i-"

"You don't get to call me that right now James. Do you know how bad I want to throw you out a window right now?"

    Bucky quieted down, looking hurt at Steve using his real name. The captain looked as though he were about to punch him.

"Whoa!" Tony said finally stepping in,a concerned look on his face "What happened? He killed one of your closest friends and you weren't this angry. What's up?"

"Tell him." Steve said shortly

"I was engaged to his sister." Bucky said

"What else?" Steve snapped

"After he told me to stay away from her." Bucky continued "That she was off limits."

Tony laughed.

"This is over your sister? The adult who's fully capable of making her own decisions?" He asked "Come on Cap, you're better than that."

  "It's not a matter of how capable she is. It's a matter of trust. A trust he broke."

Bucky sighed again. This was ridiculous.

"I loved her." He said "It's not like I did it out of spite."

"You shouldn't have been dating her in the first place!" Steve responded "No date. No falling in love."

"Says the man who fell in love after a week of knowing Peggy." Nat interjected.

"Not fair. It was different."

"It's not different,Punk." Bucky said "I loved her. I wanted to marry her. I wanted her to be able to leave the nurses core with no need to fall into factory work. As an officer's wife she would've had that."

Steve huffed. He knew Bucky was right.

"And I wanted to be happy. With Alison. Was I only allowed to be happy with someone if it wasn't Alison? Was she only allowed to be happy with someone you approved of?"

"He's right you know." Sam said from the rafters

"Shut up Sam."

"Well, now you've both fucked up and will be lucky if she ever speaks to you again." Bruce said, leaving his lab. " and due to the amount of crying we just had to handle, hulk wants to rip both of you apart."

"Good to know." Bucky said, concerned

Steve rolled his eyes.

"I'll be in my room." He said walking off.
