Fleance: It’s just like when Macbeth was killed. We are back at the beginning.

Ross: Yes, my king.

Fleance: Don’t call me that, not yet. We should wait a month, at least. We need to mourn the king’s death.

Ross: The country needs a king, and you are the heir.

Fleance: I suppose so. When will Scotland rest from these deaths? Why is ambition so important? I would throw this all away if it would bring our king back.

Ross: So would I, if that were possible. I must go and speak with the lords. Come in when you are ready.

(Ross leaves)

Fleance: Malcolm will always be my king.

But now I will be Scotland’s king.                

And war is done, and peace I’ll bring
