Gu Zhuoyan and Zhuang Fanxin met as teenagers and fell deeply in love, sharing what they would always remember as the happiest days of their youth. As time passed, circumstances pulled them apart, and they eventually broke up and lost contact, each continuing life on separate paths. Years later, fate brought them together again in an unexpected way-meeting by chance while on blind dates. Sitting across from each other, they realized how much they had changed after years of growth, loss, and heartbreak. Though no longer the carefree teens they once were, the memories of their first love lingered, leaving the question of whether they could start again unanswered. It all began in August 1981 on Hamilton Avenue, a seemingly quiet residential street in Palo Alto. This is the story of an 18-year-old French girl named Bernadette (I should say "I," for this is my story) who arrives in Palo Alto for a one-year stint as an au pair and becomes a new person. According to the dictionary, an au pair is "a young foreign person, who cares for children and does housework for a family in return for room and board and the opportunity to learn the family's language." But for Bernadette, it was nothing short of a life-changing experience, after leaving behind her stifling native environment. This is the story of a young woman's self-discovery, and of how, thanks to the love and generosity of others - the parents and children of her American family, new friends, neighbors, other au pairs of different nationalities - she learned to laugh, put trust in others, have faith in kindness, cope with hurt and overcome hatred, and be responsible. She learned to be free. Hamilton Avenue is the chronicle of a young woman's experiences grappling for the first time with desires, fears, conflicting impulses, emotions and passions. It also describes her confrontation with preconceived ideas instilled by her culture of origin as an inner life and a new sense of self emerge. As you embark on this one-year journey with me and my "new family" in a quest for love and personal freedom, you will meet a medley of young girls who forged fast and enduring friendships as we "came of age" together, as well as a rich collection of characters, young and old on a backdrop of great pop music of the '60s and '80s. Enjoy the fun, the laughter, and yes, some anguish and tears, as I become Me!

This is a diary of Valentina, a young observant woman who enjoys travelling and exploration (not only in literal terms) in spite of a web of concerns, fears and perfectionist ambitions she keeps facing. Valentina is hardly a typical au pair, a typical young student and not even a typical foreigner, but this is not just a story about uniqueness. It's a story about dealing with interior complexity, sometimes watching dreams come true and making life seem more creative than it tends to seem, but most of all about living according to one's values and sometimes, maybe, learning to lose the burden of uniqueness and accepting one's imperfections. This novel, blog or diary is based on a true story. The blog: https://aforeignersdiary.blogspot.com/

Ever feel like you're pretending to have it all together? Here's a Gen Z-inspired, relatable version of your description: This book is for the nights when everything feels too heavy. For those quiet moments when you're stuck in your head, replaying every doubt, heartbreak, and unspoken word. It's for the times you feel unseen, unheard, and like you're carrying the world alone. "For the Nights You Feel Empty" is raw, real, and messy just like life. It's a collection of thoughts, confessions, and lessons learned in the dark. I've been there too, and through these pages, you'll find you're never truly alone. Let this be your companion when everything feels overwhelming, and a reminder that brighter days are still ahead.
