The year is 1949, and Jean Louise "Scout" Finch Harris is now 21, living and working in New York as a an author and part-time poet alongside her husband and childhood-friend, Charles Baker "Dill" Harris, 23, recently-graduated law school student and highly-praised defense attorney. The two haven't been back to Maycomb since their wedding, just weeks after Scout's 18th birthday, and have decided to return for a visit, and when an old, long-forgotten friend turns up at their doorstep, they find themselves right back at where they started, 15 years into the future.

After all the events of childhood, Jem and Scout are grown up. Now in 1947 at 24, Jem is a successful lawyer, having moved from Maycomb to a small town many miles away.
