Schwarzwald Stories

This is poetry written by Satis Shroff about life in the Himalayas and the Black Forest. The verses have been kept short by the poet and is reminiscent of the haiku form.

Through Nepalese Eyes' is about the journey of a young Nepalese woman to Germany to meet her brother, who lives with his German wife and daughter in an allemanic town named Freiburg. It is a travelogue written by a sensitive, modern British public-school educated man. He describes the two worlds: Asia and Europe and the people he meets. There is a touch of sadness when his sister returns to her home in the foothills of the Himalayas.

My Oma went by a few names - Goldie, Rose, Peg - often using the latter on her travels meeting new people in wonderful locales. Peg was a remarkable human being. In her "golden years," she embarked on a series of journeys to remarkable locales around the globe, all when the world was a greater challenge to explore, especially for a mature pair like my Oma and her husband Murray. In these stories, Peg and Murray visit many places in Europe, the Caribbean, and more - seeking family, friendships, antiques, and a good meal out. They grapple with language barriers, highways, and hippies, all the while maintaining their grace and affability. Travelers through and through.

Eine idyllische Kleinstadt im Herzen des Schwarzwalds wird durch einen Mord erschüttert. Die Tochter des größten Firmenbesitzers der Region wird in der benachbarten Wutachschlucht tot aufgefunden - für den Polizisten Roman und seine Kollegen eine neue Herausforderung, noch nie ist in dieser Gegend etwas so schreckliches passiert. This is the story of a Nepalese singer who comes to the Black Forest, meets very interesting people and immerses himself into the traditional culture of his new heimat Baden-Württemberg. He joins a men's choir and sings with them for over a decade and in the process gets to know them and their lives, and what they sing about. After the singing is over the men go to a tavern and sing jolly songs about the pretty Black Forest maidens, the longing for the Heimat when one is away, about love and also sometimes about the war, deprivation, hunger and how they overcame all those sad things and survived.

This triology is about the German philosopher Martin Heidegger who became a rector of the University of Freiburg during the Third Reich where he not only made friends but also enemies. To an ordinary mortal he looked like a power and position hungry person. He retreated to Todmoos in the Black Forest and was later rehabilated. These poems are an attempt to get into the psyche of the philosopher...
