Adlerschwinge ist die Tochter von Habichtstern, der Anführerin des FederClans, dessen Mitglieder allesamt Federflügel tragen. Sie bildet gerade Käferpfote aus. Nun steht dessen Kriegerzeremonie nichts mehr im Weg. Doch kaum, dass Adlerschwinge eine neue Schülerin bekommt, verschwindet ihre Mutter und Gerüchte über eine uralte, gefährliche Krankheit kommen auf. Adlerschwinge muss den Posten ihrer Mutter übernehmen - doch was, wenn sie selbst an der Krankheit, über die niemand ihr Auskunft geben will, leidet? Ob ihr verschollener Vater Rat weiß? Adlerschwinge würde sich zu gern auf die Suche machen, doch nachdem der Schnee und mit ihm Kälte, Stürme, Elend und schließlich ein vernichtendes Feuer kam, muss sie den Clan führen. Und dann taucht auch noch ein seltsamer Kater auf, der mehr zu wissen scheint, als ihr lieb ist, und besser aussieht, als ihr Herz es vertragen kann...
