Carson has a rough life. Her father is alcoholic and abusive and her only protector is her mother. So when her mother commits suicide, who will be there to protect her? Will Bennett is a happy-go-lucky guy who is liked by everyone. Contrary to the stereotype, he is popular because he is nice and upbeat. So when he (literally) bumps into the troubled girl he has seen skateboarding down his street, he makes it his mission to befriend her. But will he be more than just a friend for her?

Bennett recounts his boyhood adventures growing up on the shores of a rural lakeside compound in New York's rolling mountains. He's a normal boy, with no particular dreams or ambitions beyond enjoying the outdoors and life at the family compound. Bennett is never aware of how isolated he is from the rest of the world, until a boy named Neal enters his life. The two become fast friends, and start to explore the perils, pitfalls and complete joy of growing up the best of friends.
