The last bell rang, and I took out my phone, seeing 17 missed calls from my dad. I sat on a bench outside of the school and dialed into my voicemail. What awaited me there was drunken yelling and rambling and I knew then that I wasn't going home just yet. I lowered the phone from my ear and sighed shakily. I wiped my watering eye and bit my lip to keep from showing any more signs of being upset.I was slightly startled as I was suddenly sharing the bench.
"Hey Carson." It was the kid, Will, who had run into me earlier.
"Hi," I replied simply, looking out at the parking lot, swinging my short legs back and forth.
"Waiting for someone?" he asked me.
"Nope," I replied. He cleared his throat.
"Well do you need a ride?" he cocked his head toward me.
I turned to look at him and gave him a slight smile.
"I'm not going home yet," I prayed he wouldn't question me, and my prayers were answered.
"Well, we can go somewhere else, then, if you want."
I raised my eyebrows at him.
"I don't even know your last name. How do I know you're not going to take me to an empty field and kill me?"
"Is that the kind of guy you take me for?" he gasped and put his hand to his heart. "I have to say, that really hurts, Carson."
I looked around and thought for a few seconds of silence, narrowing my eyes, and then clapped my hands onto my thighs.
"Okay."
"Okay?" his eyes widened and a child-like smile appeared on his eager face.
"Yep." He stood and held his hand out to me.
"Then let's go."
