Emory has lived in a gloomy mansion underneath the tropical Island of the Fay for nearly two hundred years, perfectly content and perfectly alone. The Raven Queen, the goddess who blesses him and his kind with immortal life in exchange for their service, occasionally sends him on daring missions of thievery that require far more risk and excitement than Emory has ever wanted; still, for the most part his island is a peaceful place, where nothing ever happens. Until the day a massive mud-pit opens, and from it emerges a woman the likes of which Emory has never seen. Midge cannot remember a time before she worked as a dishwasher, errand-girl and all around greyfolk grunt for Titania, the Queen of the Faewild. As part of her duties, she is assigned to serve a visiting dignitary; a mysterious and powerful figure who calls himself Chevalier. Though Midge trusts no fae, Chevalier manages to trick her into a portal that sends her hurtling through planes of existence, until she lands hard upon Emory's island. Midge doesn't like Emory, and Emory doesn't like anyone at all; despite their differences, they are forced to work together to discover Chevalier's ultimate intentions, and thwart his designs upon their destiny.
