There are two kinds of people in the world, or at least in Pepper Buckley's small, one town, one district world. Those people are Leatherbacks and Horseshoes. She's a Leatherback. A street rat. A hood. A gangster. Did I say hood? She's been fighting since she was brought into the nasty world she lives in.
