Seventeen year old Cassie Matthews has been branded the typical 'nerd' since fifth grade. She's never given a second thought to how she looks or what she wears. Desperate to get into Harvard, she devises a brilliant - albeit crazy - scheme to set her essay apart from any one else's. In a frantic attempt at securing her future, Cassie is willing to spend her last year of high school miles from home, in a foreign town with strangers, pretending to be the typical 'dumb blonde'.

Thomas, a teenage boy, rescues hundreds of tadpoles from certain death. Within the walls of his peculiar garden, he builds a pond where they can thrive, takes care of them and shields them from all kinds of dangers. Narrated from the perspective of an albino tadpole, the story follows the amphibians' adventures within the pond and, later, throughout the secluded garden. But as they become aware of their prison, some begin to wonder what lies beyond those walls. Will they risk escaping the confines of their new home, or will they remain within this glimpse of real freedom?
