The large french doors creaked open, filling the darkened home with a sharp groaning noise. My heart was thudding so loudly in my ears that I wasn't sure if there was any other noise than my pulse and the squeaking hinges.
The hall was completely dark, the only light coming in from the moon and the driveway behind me. I softly closed the door, hearing it shut into place with a faint click, and I scanned my eyes over my surroundings.
The door opened into a short entry hallway, with nothing more than a small table that had keys tossed onto its surface, and a large body mirror adjacent to the table. Everything was in its place. Undisturbed. But, for some inexplicable reason, something still felt fundamentally off, and I was terrified to find out exactly what that was.
"Harry?" I called loudly, hoping he wouldn't mind that I just let myself in, and also wanting to warn him of my presence. If he was even here.
I turned to my right, entering the rest of the large house. The living room was completely lit by the shining light of the moon reflected off of the inky ocean. All of the lights were flicked off in the living room and the kitchen, and the house was completely silent. I began to worry that Harry really wasn't here, but my gut told me not to give up yet.
I couldn't explain it, but I just had a feeling that wherever Harry was, and whatever emotional state he was in, it wasn't good. He just seemed so off when he left the café, and I couldn't imagine that would lead to a relaxing night in.
The only rooms on this floor were the kitchen, living room, guest bedroom, and bathroom. And the balcony, but, obviously, that wasn't a room.
I figured he wouldn't be in the guest bedroom or bathroom, but I quickly walked to the hallway leading to those rooms anyway. I found both of the rooms dark, empty, and quiet. Much like the rest of the house so far.
There was absolutely no way he would just leave the gate and the front door unlocked, though, if he wasn't here waiting for me. So, I kept searching.
I went back out into the living room with the wall of windows, and exited on to the balcony to check if he was maybe out on the beach. The balcony was empty, and the beach held nothing but a burnt out fire that looked like it had been there since the party he had here last month. The sand also held no footprints other than the ones I just left, so I knew it must've been at least a few days since he'd been out here last.
I let out a heavy sigh, my pulse having not ceased its frantic pace, and clenched my hands into tight fists until I felt the familiar sting of my nails against my palm. I needed to try to calm the fuck down before I went back in to look for him. I'm sure he was probably fine, maybe he just fell asleep waiting for me. Although, it had only been a couple of hours since he left the café. But, still. You never know.
I gulped down the salty air into my aching lungs, and closed my eyes for three whole breaths. Once my pulse slowed down slightly, I opened my eyes again, and headed back up the wooden stairs that led to the balcony.
I slid open the glass door that opened back into the living room, and shut it behind me. The house was just as silent and still as I had left it moments ago. I furrowed my brows, and shook my head in an attempt to clear any negative thoughts, before I headed to the stairwell between the kitchen and the hall that lead to the guest bedroom and bathroom. These stairs led up to Harry's bedroom, as well as the two other guest bedrooms.
At the top floor, I figured Harry's bedroom was the most logical place that he could be, so I checked there first. I turned to the left, heading down the short hallway, his bedroom being the only one on this side of the stairs.
His bedroom door was partly open, and there was a soft light coming from the crack in the door. My breath caught in my throat, pulse increasing once again in anticipation. I desperately hoped that he was in here. That he had just fallen asleep waiting for me, and was peacefully waiting in his bed.
