it was dark now. the two sat in each other's silence like they normally would if they were in the woods they met up everyday in.
baekhyun didn't want to speak, he didn't know what else they would possibly talk about other than ways to survive the games. it's not like they could talk about before the games or mention each other's families.
the two looked up at the hologram lighting up the arena slightly, the anthem breaking the silence between them. the two faces of the district 4 tributes were shown. baekhyun wondered where the other careers were, wondering if maybe they had split up and that's why they only saw those two today.
he looked over pitifully at chanyeol once the girl from district 7 was shown, that explained who the cannon from this morning was.
chanyeol's expression didn't budge but baekhyun could see the hint of sadness in his eyes. he knew what it felt like, someone from home being gone and there was nothing he could do about it.
he just hoped whatever happened to the girl wasn't too bad. he hoped it was somewhat peaceful.
"are you okay?" baekhyun spoke up.
chanyeol only nodded in response, his eyes moving to the district 8 boy once the music finished, the arena becoming dark once again. "it's hard to believe there's only six left."
baekhyun pursed his lips as he nodded, he never expected to make it this far but he knew it was all thanks to chanyeol.
chanyeol hummed in response, "come over here." he patted the ground beside him.
baekhyun didn't protest, he scooted over so he was now seated beside the male, they were so close that their shoulder's were against each other. he didn't move away when chanyeol wrapped his arm around him. the nights were becoming chillier, the days hotter.
"this should never of happened." chanyeol spoke up, the thought of the number of tributes thinning out left him worried. anytime now the next cannon could be him, or even baekhyun.
"i know." baekhyun mumbled as he looked down at chanyeol's hand that held him close.
"is it weird that i think one of us can make it?" chanyeol questioned, "now that there's only six of us, i feel like it's actually possible."
"maybe," baekhyun sighed, he didn't want to get his hopes up or chanyeol's either, "i think you can."
"really? with my bad shoulder you still think i can win?" chanyeol chuckled as he looked down at the male.
baekhyun nodded, "it'll get better with lots of rest," he spoke up, turning so he was facing the taller, "so go to sleep and i'll take watch."
"okay, just wake me up when it's my turn to look out." chanyeol replied, he didn't know why but he carefully pulled himself down, his head resting comfortably on baekhyun's lap. he was pretty sure if the smaller asked he'd blame it on his sore shoulder.
but baekhyun didn't question him, instead the small male's slender hands travelled to the male's dark curly hair, braiding and brushing the strands quietly.
"you didn't wake me up the first time." baekhyun mumbled, continuing from what chanyeol had just said earlier before getting comfortable.
"well, that's because you needed sleep more than me then." chanyeol spoke up.
"i can say that about you now." baekhyun replied, his eyes locking with chanyeol's brown pair, it was a little difficult to see them in the dark, but he could still see the subtle twinkle in them.
"just promise me you'll sleep, you need rest too." chanyeol sighed, closing his eyes but listening out for the district 8 boy's response.
"i promise."
