baekhyun's eyes slowly opened, it was the middle of the night now but he felt wide awake, it was probably due to falling asleep so soon in the last night. he lifted his head from dirt, dusting away the residue from his cheek. there was the drawing of his home, just slightly dusted due to him sleeping over it.
he was still timid to leave the small cave he crawled into, even though the rain had stopped. it was a little comforting being under some shelter, hidden away from the games.
he wondered how chanyeol was, he hadn't heard any cannons, surely the boy had made it out of another round of torturous rain.
he looked down at his cracked and dry hands, he could live with it, it wasn't that sore anymore, just uncomfortable. it seemed the ointment wasn't much help to them.
he patted his pocket for his small clothe of berries, he was hungry. his brows furrowed, they weren't there.
where was his food?
he must of left it before he ran from the rain. he muttered a curse under his breath, he was certain he could get some more in the morning.
he sat up slightly at the sound of the rustling of dead leaves, he peeked his head out the bundle of rocks, his eyes widening at the sight of a couple squirrels tearing apart his small clothe of berries.
he didn't even know how they managed to get them from his pocket. he must of dropped them during his hurry to find some shelter.
"hey! hey, stop!" baekhyun shooed as he scurried over, scaring the small creatures away. he managed to salvage some of the berries, he really needed to keep some of them to know which berries were edible and not, sometimes some of them looked too similar.
he stood back up with a wince, his ankle was still painful to walk on. when was it going to get better? he couldn't deal with a sore leg right now, it made him more at a disadvantage of winning, if he couldn't win in a fight with the other tributes his only option was to run but he didn't have that anymore.
his limping back to the small cave stopped once a sudden sound of a faint scream rendered him still.
he didn't know who it could be, chanyeol? it didn't sound like chanyeol, or maybe it was too far away to recognise.
the sound of the cannon then filled the arena.
baekhyun was worried now, the scream sounded so close, this must be the finalé. this had to be it. there was only so little tributes left, 3 of them now with the sudden death. the audience were wanting a good show.
his head immediately turned at the sound of an animal squealing.
he recognised it.
it sounded similar to the wild boar out in the woods with chanyeol but it was more deep and loud.
chanyeol had mentioned the boar in these woods, yet baekhyun had never encountered them before.
"they're quite ferocious things, actually."
he was scared to move a single muscle now, what if he stepped on a branch and alerted them to where he was?
his eyes frantically searched the trees and bushes but it was difficult to see in the dark. his heart was racing and his breathing was growing more rapid.
his eyes finally caught a pair glistening in the dark, they were too tall in the bush to be a tribute.
he held his breath as it eventually clicked.
it was one of them.
it was one of the capitol mutts, the gamemakers creation for the finale and baekhyun was its next target.
