"What's this I hear about you hooking up with Luke in the handicap bathroom at school?" I felt her nails digging into my arm as I winced.
"It's a rumor." I whispered avoiding her eyes.
"Yeah? It better because if I find out its true I'm telling mom you're whoring around. You know she won't think twice about sending you back here you came from." she seethed before dropping my arm with such force that it hit the wall behind me. When she walked away I allowed myself to fix my uniform and take a breath.
I was turning to leave before Charlie appeared and grabbed my hand softly. The look in his eyes spoke enough. He was sorry. I looked away from his sorrowful glance and grabbed my purse before heading out to my car.
I needed to go. I decided to stop at Starbucks before I went to school. Starbucks could cheer me up no matter what. When I had fifteen minutes before class started I left and prepared myself for the hell I was soon to enter. I silently wished I'd have a River free day.
"Do tell about your hook up with Luke." Leslie and Carter spoke rehearsed standing at my locker.
"It's a rumor." I repeated for the second time today.
"Ooh well River punched him dead in the face this morning when he found out. Everyone was so surprised he didn't kill him. Luke went home but he had a black eye forming." Carter said sipping a latte. I ignored her story as I opened my locker.
"I wonder why'd he punch his best friend for you if nothing is going on between you two." Leslie inquired.
"Nothing is going on. He's just messing with me. I d-don't want to talk about him anymore. Okay?" I snapped growing annoyed.
"Sure." Leslie said cutting off Carter as she glared at him. He took my hand and led me to first hour. As if he sensed my nervousness he took my hand and dramatically kissed it.
"It'll be fine." I nodded doubtfully as turned to walk in when I caught River moving from the seat neighboring mine to his original seat next to the slut.
That lesson was undeserving cold.
The stares I had once grown accustomed to were now worse. Everyone was whispering and pointing whenever I walked into the room.
What made it worse was that Chloe was doing it too. I had thought after all these years I would be used to her hating me but I wasn't. I would never be used to it. Each glare and mean word made a new scar on my heart grow. The pain was worse than anything.
We used to best friends.
I swallowed before I went to sit at the table I usually shared with Leslie and Carter, alone. They had student council meetings. I wasn't an active school board member. I hated interactive things.
I was going over my Anatomy and Physiology notes when someone placed a tray next to me. Soon after dark boots and light jeans sat in the seat. I looked up as well as the rest of lunch room.
"What are you doing?" I asked incredulously.
"So much emotion!" He said raising and eyebrow. "Who knew you were capable of expressing it."
I was thinking of a smart remark when he spoke. "But to answer your inquiry, I'm eating lunch. See." he pointed to his nicely made hamburger and fries. How the hell? He must have slept with the cooks. I looked at my runny pasta and shuddered.
"I'll order for you for now on." He added staring at it in disgust.
"W-why are you sitting with me?" I looked at him and then around to the people who were looking at us returning to their lunch when they realize nothing spectacular was going to happen. I caught her eye though. I didn't miss the killer glare she handed to me either. She hates me.
