•••Amelia•••"Santa Clause, go straight to the ghetto." I sung along with James Brown at the radio plays one of my favorite Christmas songs. My fingers tap on my steering wheel as I pulled into the driveway of my childhood home.
Loads of cars that are parked on the street are probably just half of my family that is here so far. I arrived yesterday morning but spent most of my time cooking three sides that my mother always has me in charge of. Mac & Cheese, Yams and Black-eyed peas. All of those sides, I've learned from her—she's the reason why I'm pretty good at cooking.
I shut off my car and gather my things. My phone lights up with a notification. A smile forms when I see it's from Prince. We spent some time before I left working with that iPad I gave him, now he won't stop texting me but I don't mind. This morning, I almost cried when I didn't feel him next to me. I guess we do have a strong bond.
Prince: Hope U have a good time. Tell every1 Eye said 'Hi' :) Love & Miss U❤️
Amelia: Love and miss you too, Honey Bear😚...I'll tell everyone....once I tell them about us😂
Prince: Ah...Eye forgot about that. It will go well, Eye promise😊❤️....Text me later?
Amelia: Yep! Bye😘
I place my phone in my jacket before stepping out of the car. A few of my older cousins were in the yard playing the snow with my nieces and nephews. Andre, the seventeen old, cousin of mines noticed me first.
"Aye! Melia Vanilla is home!" He calls out, having all of the children look over at me the charging over—including him.
Before I could even ask for him to bring in the food, all nine of them came over with hugs. Yes, nine. I gave out hugs and kisses all around for each of them.
"I miss you, Auntie Melia. We never slept over at your house anymore." My niece, Faith, says with a slight pout. I pick up the five-year-old as her brother, Elijah looks up at me.
"We have fun there! You let us eat candy and watch whatever we want." Elijah agrees with her.
I did. Usually, I have Angela's three kids and Shawn's two kids over for two days, at least twice a month. Since I've been working and in Minnesota, those days have been postponed.
"Auntie Melia has been working a lot lately but I promise that next time I come back, I will have you all over we and can have fun. Okay?" I said them as a few of them nod along. Looking over at Andre, "Can you take one of the pots? I can put these other two pans on top of each other." I place Faith back in the ground as they ran off the play again.
We both take out the pans and pot then heading into the house. Andre nudges me, "So how's it working for that famous guy?"
This boy...
"That famous guy." I shake my head. "He's pretty cool, hard-working but he's all-around a nice guy," I answered back while chuckling. Andre and I walk into the house with help from one of my uncles opening the door for us.
Jamal is my father's brother—twin brother at that. He's always been protective over us meaning me and my sister our whole lives. Since Daddy passed on, he has been more protective especially when over my mother. Uncle Jamal is a tough-old school man that takes no shit from anyone. He and my father were very much alike so sometimes it feels like my dad is still around. Same humor, same stern tone, same hard on the outside but soft in the inside mindset.
