 “Hold on” Austin said

I didn’t reply. “You trust me?” he asked. I looked up to his face and slightly nodded. “I trust you.” I said under my breath. I curled my arms around him and we were off.

I couldn’t make out if we were going too fast. All I knew was everything just zapped past us. Or we zapped past everything. Either way, I couldn’t see much, just a mash of lots of colours. But I could feel the wind brush against my cheek and flow through my hair. It felt really good, surprisingly.

Then, all of it came to a sudden halt. I looked around to see that we were still a few streets away from my house.

So why did we stop?

“Road block” said Austin “Is there a way around?”

I nodded, “But that way is too long.”

“We don’t really have much of a choice.” He said and smiled.

I directed him as we moved along. By the time we reached my house, it was already seven, and by the time we finished working on the Science assignment, it was 7:50 pm. My stomach was growling with hunger. I got up to order pizza. Austin was leaving.

“Hey Austin?” I said “Why don’t you stay for dinner? You must be hungry.”

“No its okay. Thanks anyway.” He said.

“Please, it’s the least you can do. You gave me a ride home.” I said.

“Ok. I’ll stay.” He said after a moment’s pause.

“Unless you have other plans.” I added quickly.

“I don’t.” He smiled.

“So you can call your parents and tell-“

“No, its fine. I live by myself.” He cut me off.

“Oh, ok” I said

He lives on his own?

*******

We were sitting on the couch waiting for the pizza. It was taking unusually long today.

“So,” He said, prolonging the ‘o’ again. “What’s going between Ashton and Kate?”

“They have been ‘enemies’ since grade four. I never knew why.” I shrugged.

“It doesn’t seem so. They seem to be cool with each other. Sure, they fight sometimes.”

“I don’t know. I am also new to this. They seem to be changing which is pretty big. It is almost a miracle.” I said

The bell rang.

“Pizza.” He said.

“Finally.” I said. I was beginning to wonder if the pizza delivery guy ate the pizza and ran away.

I got up, opened the door, took the pizza, paid the man and closed the door.

There was silence while we ate, and it was reaching the stage of awkwardness when Austin decided to start a conversation. I am glad he did.

“So,” He said prolonging the ‘o’.

He does that a lot, doesn’t he?

“How did you end up in detention today?”

“Um...that” I said. Why did he have to bring this up now? Maybe I’m not so glad that he started a conversation after all.

“I understand if you don’t want to tell.” He said

“No, it’s fine. I’ll tell you.” I paused. “IgotdetentionforpunchingMason.” I said it all in one breath.

“What?” He said.

I took a breath and then repeated myself, slowly. “I got detention for punching Mason.”

You punched Mason? Wow.....” He said in an obvious tone of surprise.

I nodded.

 “Why?” he asked curiously.

“He ill-treated Molly, that’s why.” I said.

“Makes sense.” He said. “But I didn’t know you had it in you.” He said.

“What?” I asked

“You know, hitting people.” He shrugged.

“Hey!” I said in a bit of annoyed tone.

“What? You just don’t look like that kind of person.” He said raising his hands.

“Well, there’s more to me that what meets the eye.” I said.

“Really?” He said, with a mischievous smile.

“What are you doing?” I asked narrowing my eyes.

“Pillow fight!!” he shouted picking the pillow behind him and hitting it on my head.

“Hey!” I said and picked another pillow. We kept hitting the pillows and running around for five minutes and fell back on the couch exhausted. We both were breathing heavy but were still laughing. I got up pulling my brown hair away from my face.

We decided on watching a movie even though it was a school night. I don’t remember what happened next. I must have fallen asleep because the next thing I know is it is six in the morning and I am on the couch. The pizza boxes were missing. The T.V. was off. Austin wasn’t there.

I got up trying to untangle my twisted hair by running my fingers through them. I say running, but it was more like forcing my fingers through that tangled mess. I got up and went to the kitchen. There was a note on the counter. I picked it up, making no effort to hide my tingling excitement.

I smiled to myself on reading it.

You slept during the movie, so I left not wanting to wake you up. The leftover pizza is in the refrigerator. Thanks for the dinner, I had a wonderful time.

See you in school.

Austin :)

P.S. I took the Science assignment with me to do the finishing.
