A boy of thirteen stared at the lit match in his hand as he made his final wishes to the world before he dropped the match onto his already kerosene covered body.
The boy was ready to go; he had been for quite some time. Norman, the boy's best friend had turned his back on him in his time of need.
"Ray," the boy faintly heard, tuning out the sounds of children screaming his name as he continued to stare at the match. Ray was brought back into the present when he heard the door open only for it to shut soon after.
Norman was standing there, his white hair uncharacteristically messy. Norman's eyes widened when he saw the match and the empty kerosene bottle on the bed. He ran over to Ray and blew the match out, tackling Ray onto the bed.
"Ray, please tell me you weren't just about to take you life," Norman growls, his face inches from the boy with messy black hair. Ray turned away, not daring to look into Norman's eyes for fear of crying.
"Yes. Yes I was. I was going to light myself on fire. Why do you care though? Just the other day you threatened to kill me if I talked to you again and now here you are," Ray snapped. "Norman, what is it that you want from me before I leave this world."
The usually smart boy was at a loss for words. No, he though, Why? Why did this have to happen? Norman stormed over to Ray and grabbed the scruff of his shirt and brought him up so that they were eye to eye.
"This-this is what I want," Norman growled as he captured Ray's lips in a kiss, squeezing the boy to his chest as he started to cry. Ray was frozen.
Norman broke away, looking at Ray in confusion until he saw the blank face that he had seen on his best friend countless times. Norman took Ray's face in his hands and started to braid his messy hair.
Ray immediately was back in the game and scrambled to get away from Norman and his braiding. Norman smiled.
Yes, he had feelings for his best friend. He needed his best friend.
Ray started at Norman. "Why are you so mean to me," Ray demanded as he grabbed a knife from his desk. He held it up so that it would pierce his stomach but before he could, something was ripped out of his hands and yet again, his lips were on Norman's.
Ray had to stop himself from leaning into the kiss. Norman sensed this and brought Ray closer. "Ray, if you take your life, my life will be ruined," Norman told Ray sternly, breaking away.
"No it woul-" Ray started but Norman quickly cut him off.
"No, it would. I've had feelings for you for years. I didn't know how else to get your attention so I thought maybe if I was mean to you, I could get you to notice me as more than a friend but it backfired. You tried to take your life because of me..."
Ray growled as he blushed. "IlikeyoutooNormanandthatwaswhyIfeltsoscaredwhenyouthreatenedtohurtme," Ray suddenly burst out sobbing, hiding his head in Norman's shirt.
Norman smiled and rubbed Ray's back. The two sat there together, simply being what the other needed.
