A small boy with messy black hair stared at his book, totally ignoring his friend who kept trying to get him to say a single word.

Ray was a strange kid. Whenever the kids were playing, he would be caught either reading or studying. He always had top grades, yet he didn't even care. He only had five friends: Gilda, Don, Emma, Norman, and Phil (I love Phil).

"...RAY!" Emma screamed, her patience finally wearing thin. She pounced on Ray, causing the boy to roll down the hill as she chased after him.

"Hm, what is this? IS this a log," a kind and familiar voice asked. Ray looked up blushing to see Norman standing there, smirking down at the smaller of the two.

"No, Emma jumped on me, causing me to roll down the hill," Ray grumbled, grabbing his book and immediately started reading again. A small amount of weight landed in Ray's lap and he stopped reading to look up to see Phil, his little brother, sitting in his lap.

"Ray, come play with us. Norman caught us all again!" Phil whined. Ray started at the boy with his usual eyes void of any emotion and smiled.

"Sorry, I can't. I have to study," Ray said in a depressed voice as he stood up and walked away. Norman stared after him, confused to no extent. He told the smaller kids that he also needed to study for that math test in three weeks.

"Leave me alone Norman," Ray growled, annoyed. Norman shook his head and ran in front of Ray.

"No. You have been so negative lately. Why?" Norman asked, taking the book out of Ray's hands. Ray scoffed and looked away.

"Maybe because you broke your promise."

Norman stared at Ray. "What, do you mean?"

Ray stared at the ground. "You promised to never let me get hurt," the boy growled. "You broke that promise. You didn't escape when you could've and now you're going to die."

Ray bit his lip, trying to stop the tears from escaping the tear dam that Ray worked so hard to keep maintained. Norman smiled down at Ray.

"That's because we're all escaping together. I'm not going to be taken, it's alright," Norman told Ray, who had let a couple of tears out.

Ray started to sob and grabbed Norman and cried. "Norman, don't scare me like that. You are my best friend and I can't bear to lose you," Ray sobbed.

Norman smiled down at Ray. "I'm not going to let myself be killed. I also won't let you go through with your big plan to light yourself on fire to create a big distraction," Norman said sternly.

Ray's eyes widened. He looked up at Norman in shock. "How did you know that I was going to do that? I have kept that secret for so long!" Ray demanded, staring up at Norman.

Norman smiled. "I make it my business to know what my best friend and crush is planning to do for a big escape."

Ray blushed and leaned in and hugged Norman again. The two best friends stood there for a couple minutes, hugging each other happily.

~~~~~~~~~~Five years later~~~~~~~~~~~
Norman and Ray were running around a cafe, trying to get all the orders done in time. Ray continued to yell at Emma, who was on her phone browsing the internet for memes while Norman and Ray had to man all three stations.
As soon as the dinner rush was over, Ray and Norman slumped down into their seats as Emma closed shop. They both sighed with relief.
"Ray, can you come over later? I want to talk to you," Norman said quietly into Ray's ear so that Emma couldn't hear. Ray nodded slightly, which meant to Norman "YEP!"
About an hour after Norman had arrived home, the boy heard a knock on the door. He opened it quickly to see Ray standing there.
"What did you want to talk about?" Ray asked, smiling one of his rare smiles. Norman leaned down and hugged him. Ray was frozen in shock before he hugged back.
"What was that about?" Ray chuckled when Norman had let go.
"Ray, since we escaped, I've had feelings for you but I was so scared to let them out. I thought that tonight could be the night... Ray, will you be my boyfriend?" Norman asked, staring at Ray seriously.
Ray blushed. "O-okay. I also have had feelings for you for quite some time now," he whispered, looking up at Norman.
Norman smiled, leaning down and capturing Ray's lips in a gentle kiss. It was sloppy because they didn't know how to do it, but they didn't care. To them, it was just as perfect as the man standing in front of them.
