It was raining. Again.

Moving away from the window, I walked over to the multiple TVs we had set up and sat down in the swivel chair.

It had been 2 whole weeks of non stop rain and I hadn't seen Nod or any of my other friends from the forest since then. I was getting a little worried.

Normally it didn't matter what the weather was like, Nod always showed up for our meetings, usually with Mub right behind him.

"Mary Katherine? You in here? Oh! Sorry MK. I'm still not used to that even if it has been nearly half a year," my dad laughed.

"It's fine, dad," I say dismissively, still staring at the TVs.

Where are they? I thought, Nod would have said something if he wasn't going to be able to make it for a while, and even if he didn't someone else would have come to see me by now right? Did they simply forget to tell me or-

A hand touched my shoulder and I turn around to see my dad staring down at me with a concerned look on his face.

"Stop worrying, I'm sure they're fine, from what you've told me those leaf men are a very capable bunch you know," he smiles comfortingly and I feel my worries subside a little.

Nodding, I smiled at the memory of when I first met the leaf men, capable was an understatement, despite this I still couldn't shake the feeling that there was something wrong.

"How about I make us some lunch to get your mind off of things? Chicken sandwiches okay?" He asks.

Hesitating slightly I take one last glance back at the screens, then get out of the chair and follow my dad to the kitchen.

"Lunch sounds great."

MK!

I jolt awake, sweat dripping down my back, my whole body shaking as my eyes dart around the room.

There was no one there but then,

who was calling out to me?

I had gone to bed early in the hopes of getting rid of the sense of dread sitting in my stomach but if anything it had gotten worse, something was wrong.

Untangling myself from the sheets I quickly made my way over to my dresser to get changed, I pull on a plain white t-shirt, black jeans and my favourite maroon hoodie.
Grabbing my boots I quietly start to make my way downstairs, stopping only to peek into my dads room.

He was snoring loudly with Ozzy curled up next to his face, I feel kinda bad for leaving without telling him but he would insist on coming with me and I don't want to put him in danger.

Once downstairs I pull on my brown leather boots and grab my backpack. It's already fully stocked with anything I might need, including a can of bug spray. I write a note to my dad telling him not to worry and stick it to one of the TVs where I know he'll see it.

I grab my helmet and run out the door and into the rain, it had slowed down to a light drizzle so I didn't bother bringing a rain coat.

I made my way through the damp grass and then I was standing right at the edge of the woods, there'd be no turning back after this.

With a deep breath I stepped into the trees, this time slightly more prepared for what lay ahead.

It's been nearly half an hour since I left the house and still no sign of any of my friends, it had stopped raining a little while ago but it was still just as cold.

I had forgotten how frightening the woods could be in the darkness of night, the trees loomed over me like shadowed monsters, the harsh winds blocking out any other sound apart from its own tortured screams.

As soon as I had stepped into the forest, the wind gradually began to pick up until it was a physical struggle to stay standing. My fingers were numb from the cold and I had yet to hear the mysterious voice again.

Perhaps I should've waited for the sun to come up before coming out here......

Just as I thought this, the helmet's goggles started to get glitchy and full of static until it eventually shut down completely, pitch blackness filling my vision.

"No no no no, come on! Not now!" I complained as I tried banging my hand against it to get it to work. My vision stayed blank.

Sighing, I pulled the helmet off and took out my phone to use as a torch, it was right at this time my phone decided to die.

"Typical...." I muttered, shoving my phone back into my pocket. "What am I supposed to do now?" I ask, glaring into the darkness in front of me. It didn't respond.

That's when the voice started up again.

MK....

Twisting my head around, I try to find the source of the mysterious voice, it's once frantic yelling only a whisper now but still able to cut through the roar of the wind.

This way....follow my voice....hurry.....

With no other choice, I follow the voice as I climb over rocks and duck under branches, the wind settling down to a slight breeze with nothing but the moonlight to guide my way. Eventually it leads me to a small clearing bathed in moonlight, the ground is covered in moss and fireflies float threw the air.

I slowly make my way to the centre of the clearing and the voice goes silent.

"Hello? You still there?" I ask.

It's only now that I realise how quiet the forest was, the wind had stopped completely now but the usual racket of the woodland creatures was nowhere to be seen.

It was deadly silent.

And then the sky began to thunder, lightning streaked across the sky like a beacon as a storm gathered above my head and the wind swept me off my feet.

The familiarity of the situation was unnerving as I was tossed around in the air, arms and legs waving around like a windmill on overdrive. I couldn't help the screams that left my throat as I spun around the clearing, barely noticing that the trees were rising higher and higher into the sky.

It all stopped abruptly as I hit the ground with a hard thud and the world turned black.
