Chapter 7 - The Tunnels

MK POV
The rock had opened up to a dark tunnel, Ronin said that there were hundreds of them all under Moonhaven. They had been discovered long before he was alive, not even Nim Galuu knew much about them.

When Ronin became captain of the leaf men he did a thorough inspection of the tunnels before closing them off as a security risk, the only other people who knew about them were Tara and his first officer, Finn.

However, in case of an emergency he gave Finn explicit instructions on possible evacuation routes, like the one we were using now. He said that if the people of Moonhaven were hiding anywhere, then it would be here.

The tunnel we were using was damp and narrow, my shoulders brushing the walls every few steps. Ronin was walking in front of me holding a torch. He moved without hesitation, as sure and steady as ever despite the increasingly slippery floor.

Nod was walking behind me, a hand on my back just in case.

"Are we there yet?" He complained, a sigh heaving its way from his chest.

I give him a curious look before continuing to follow after Ronin. The ceiling was starting to get lower so I had to tilt my head a bit.

"Heeeeeyyyyyyyy, are you listening to me?"

Ronin said nothing as he kept walking forward, hunched over and eyes staring straight ahead.

I heard an annoyed huff from behind me and then a soft thud followed by mild cursing. I turn around to see Nod clutching his head and shooting a glare at the ceiling, I let out an amused chuckle which led to the glare being turned on me.

"And after all those times I stopped you from slipping, this is the thanks I get?" He accuses, a slight smile on his lips.

I just smile and shrug before going after Ronin again, he had a very unimpressed look on his face.

"Hurry up slowpoke or we'll leave you behind," I call out.

I hear him grumble something before following after us, the sound of his footsteps bouncing off the walls.

We walked for another 20 minutes before Ronin finally stopped. We stood at the front of a makeshift door, it was at least 3 metres tall and had strange little squiggles carved into it.

We stand there in silence for a few more minutes before Nod speaks up.

"Sooooooooo, that's a door."

I mentally facepalm at the way he phrased it but decided it was probably better then just saying nothing.

Ronin gave him a blank look.

"Be patient," he said gruffly.

Nod opened his mouth once more but was stopped as the ground began to shake.

"What's going on?!" I scream, desperately trying to steady myself against the now crumbling wall.

The door has now slowly started to sink into the ground revealing nothing but pitch black.

"Ronin?! Mind filling us in?!" Nod yells.

"Nope."

I swear I can see a sadistic little smirk on his face before the ground tilts and we're sent tumbling into the darkness, Ronin's torch long forgotten.

I hit the ground hard as I'm thrown forward and begin sliding down on my stomach, it's like one of those black water slides at Wet 'n' Wild, but instead of a thrill of excitement you get a nauseating sense of fear.

I'm suddenly lurched upwards to the side and I can feel my heart stop beating for a good few seconds before continuing its previously rapid pace.

The ground is weirdly smooth so it doesn't hurt as we zip down the dark tunnel but it doesn't make it any less terrifying either.

I make high pitched screeching noises every time I take a sharp turn or the ground takes a sudden dip, this mixed perfectly together with Nod's vast yet unsurprisingly long list of swear words made the ride all that much enjoyable.

If I didn't know any better I'd say that I could hear Ronin laughing, but I'm gonna write that off as a delusion because that picture scares me even more then our current predicament.

It isn't much longer before I see a light up ahead, and it's an even shorter amount of time before I'm hurtling through it and crashing onto the ground.

Nod shoots out a few seconds later, narrowly missing crushing me against a nearby wall and instead flying straight into a clump of bushes.

Annoyingly, Ronin slides out with the grace and elegance of cat while also managing to look as if he just came back from a nice evening stroll.

Nod has finally managed to untangle himself from the shrubbery and points an accusatory finger at Ronin.

"What the hell was that for?!"

Ronin just shrugs.

"Revenge?"

I can tell Nod is about to shout something back at him but I stop him with a hand on his shoulder.

"Uh Nod? You might wanna see this......"

He gives me a confused look before turning in the same direction and gaping at the sight.

We were now standing inside of what looked to be a ginormous hollowed out tree, except instead of the usual smooth surface of the wood, the walls were covered in multicoloured plants that were lit up like Christmas lights.

Everywhere you looked there was something new and exotic, even Ronin, who had been on many an adventure seemed a little awestruck by the view.

There was giant waterfall at the very back of the cavern, the water glowing a vibrant blue that made me want to dive in and never get out.

The most amazing thing however was the mini civilisation that had been set up in the middle. It was like those fairy houses I made as a child, my dad saved them all and we built our own little village in the backyard.

The difference here though was that they had actual people wondering around.

It's incredible...." I whisper.

"Well Ronin gives very detailed instructions, it'd be more impressive if it wasn't."

I yelped at the unexpected voice and end up nearly tripping over Nod, luckily he manages to catch me and steady me on my feet.

When I look up I see a leaf man in the signature green armour holding a helmet under his arm. He was tall and had very noticeable red hair, he wore an easy going smile on his face but I had a feeling that he wasn't as relaxed as he seemed to look.

"I apologise for frightening you, that was not my intention. My name is Finn, it is a pleasure to meet you."
