You startled, head snapping up from the book laid open on your pillow. You listened closely again for the sound, but all was still and silent. Sleep won over adrenaline, and your eyelids began to drift shut, your brain whispering that whatever you had heard was your imagination.
The sound came again and your heartbeat rocketed, all semblance of sleep forgotten.
You knew that creak of the floorboards outside your room all too well.
Your hand flew underneath your pillow, closing around the familiar outline of your pocketknife. You waited, tensed, for the intruder, but as a minute, then two, then three passed, nothing came.
Danger seemingly averted, your brain played tug-of-war, caught between going back to sleep and investigating the source of the noise. Your room is safe - stay there, demanded your smart, logical side. How can you sleep when there could be a potential criminal lurking in the hallways - what if they murder the younger ones down the hall? asked your stupid, adventurous side.
Needless to say, stupid, adventurous side won. You couldn't possibly let anything happen to the children.
You snuck out of your room into the dark - and empty - hallway, pocketknife clutched in your sweaty palm. Creeping down the hallway towards the exit, glowing in the moonlight, you internally sighed in relief to find that nothing seemed disturbed. You turned back, ready to go back to bed, when a hand shot out of the darkness and grabbed your arm, pulling you towards them and another clasping over your mouth, stifling the scream that rose in your throat. You felt the knife drop from your hand, leaving you completely defenseless.
You caught a glimpse of dark eyes and platinum-blonde hair before you were unceremoniously shoved against the wall, head slamming against the stone. Your vision started to black - questions running through your mind, your smart, logical side screaming I told you so - as your legs gave out.
"Now, now," a voice whispered in amusement, right before everything went black. "What do we have here? Another assassin sent to kill me on my first day of school?"
