"AVADA KEDAVRA!"
A shrill scream comes from below the balcony, piercing through the dullness of chaos around us. Another life, gone. My breath comes in gasps, eyes flying, searching for those dreaded masks that have, no doubt, taken another life.
"I've got your back, yeah?" The boy next to me murmurs the familiar phrase, wand gripped in his hand. His knuckles are white, tension drawing his body taught in apprehension.
"And I've got yours," I breathe back. My stance mirrors his, and I am praying - praying that we make it through.
Death Eaters will no doubt see the pair of us as blood traitors, creeping through the warring castle in this disturbingly empty hallway, donned in the robes they have been ordered to turn their wands on. His shock of blonde is certainly no help, I think. It is a target on his back - now a symbol of treason, rather than the proud name he once used to parade around.
These are the hallways we used to fly down, glowing in the sunlight that poured in through the windows. These are the walls we scarred, bathed in the adrenaline of practice duels. I am too lost in our memories as we inch down the corridors, desperate to drown out the broken windows and sounds of death that surround us.
I am too lost, I think, because I only see the white bone of the mask only when the tip of their wand is erupting in green.
I spin, shoving him out of the way, because I promised that I'd have his back since we were eleven. And that is all I can think as I am thrown backward by the spell, air leaving my lungs as I fly through the air.
Memories fly through my vision. His hand, extended, offered with a grin as I lay on the ground. His jaw, tight with anger, as he helps conceal another bruise from home. He has always had my back.
And as the world goes black and everything still, I realize. I have finally had his.
