Chapter 3
“Hey, Mr. Philips” I smiled innocently “Since I’m doing nothing important here, I was wondering if you could help me understand something in math?”
I nibbled on my finger nails, utterly nervous .I’ve never ever pulled off a hoax before. Especially not on a teacher! Alas, it was too late to back down.
Because it was an essential part of the plan, Dylan told me that the teacher in the detention room was called Mr. Philips and that he was a math teacher.
When Mr. Philips agreed to help me, I disclosed the huge geometry book I hid behind my back. I turned one page after another; deliberate on finding something complex to be solved.
Perfect! I thought, a sly smile forming on my lips.
I found a very complicated one with an octagon in it.
“That one” I pointed my finger at the question.
Even though my heart was beating frantically inside my chest, I tried to look as calm and casual as possible on the outside.
He looked at the question. After a couple of seconds, all his focus was set on the book, his chestnut brown eyes squinting as a sign of concentration.
The plan was working! I felt victorious and had to fight the urge to do a fist pump.
I looked to my left to see Dylan a couple of steps away from the half opened door, tiptoeing towards it. His backpack slung over his shoulder and mine was clenched in his hand.
A couple of seconds after Dylan succeeded to sneak out,Mr. Philips had figured out how to solve the geometry problem. He started explaining to me how to solve it, and I wasn’t paying attention to a word he was saying, but I was nodding throughout anyway.
After he was finally done explaining I asked him if I could go to the bathroom. I left the geometry book on my desk as a proof that I was going to come back. Dylan assured me that his buddy in detention will give it back to me.
I got out of the detention room, seeing Dylan right in front of me with a smile on his face.
“Oh my god, I can’t believe I just did that!” I exclaimed in apparent ecstasy.
“shhh, keep it down you’re going to get us caught” he replied in between laughs.
I took back my backpack from himand we both started walking towards the school gate.
“How do you know that the fellows in detention won’t rat you out?” I asked as soon as we were out of the school premises.
“You wouldn’t believe me if I told you”
“Try me” I insisted, leaning on the bark of the oak tree right in front of the school.
“Hmm, give me a second to think it over” he responded playfully pretending to think about it.
“No” he shook his head “there’s no way I’m going to tell you”
“Hey!” I scowled at him, and then looked to the other side of the road to see the cars passing by swiftly. “I didn’t even want to know anyway” I shot back in the same jokey manner.
My eyes widened in astonishment not believing what I was seeing.
“Oh no” I whispered when I saw Jake rushing towards us.
“Kelly, are you okay?”
“Oh she’s okay, but you definitely won’t be!” Jake intruded, holding Dylan by the collar and his fist was ready to strike. I couldn’t describe the way he looked at Dylan, his eyes full of rage. If looks could kill, Dylan would definitely be dead by now. It seemed to me that Jake and Dylan knew each other from before.
Once I was able to get a closer look at Jake, I noticed that he already had a bruised eye.
“Jake!! What the hell do you think you’re doing” I seethed with rage.
“Stay out of it” he hissed back and then turned to punch Dylan. That’s when Dylan shoved Jake causing him to stumble backwards and lose his balance; he eventually ended up on the floor.
“You already have one bad eye, I’m sure you don’t want another.” Disgust laced Dylan’s words; he then held my wrist and tugged me away from Jake.
I couldn’t help but look back at Jake; I’m not going to lie. Seeing him grimace in pain hurt me a little. I still had feelings for him; I mean one couldn’t just forget about a relationship that lasted for 15 months so quickly. But he clearly could, as he’s been giving me the cold shoulder ever since our break-up.
After we were a good distance awayfrom Jake, I came to a halt.
“Dylan, what in the wo-”
“You know the dude?” he cut me off. I wasn’t sure if that was a statement or question, so I just decided it was the second one.
“Umm, yeah?” I answered staring at the large building behind him. I didn’t want to tell him that Jake was my ex; I guess I just didn’t feel comfortable with telling him.
He opened his mouth to say something, but he decided not to, and he sighed instead, his expression softening.
“I’m sorry you had to see this” he smiled sincerely, adjusting his backpack over his shoulder. “I just didn’t expect that coward to come back”
“It’s okay, don’t worry about it” I returned his smile with one of my own “What was the cause of all this anyway?”
“It’s a long story, and I kind of have to leave now cause I promised some of friends that’ll meet up with them”
I had a feeling that he was trying to avoid telling me and he probably sensed that, because then he said
“But I promise I’ll tell you the next time I see you”
“Promise?”
“Promise”
And he did sound pretty genuine.
“I’ll see you later at school then?”
“Yeah” I nodded
“Oh and thanks for standing up for me there”
“Don’t even mention it” I waved my hand off.
“Goodbye Kelly!”
“Goodbye” I replied as I watched him leave.
It was 4:15 by now, and I told my mother I’ll be home at 5:15
What was I going to do in a whole hour, it only took me about 6 minutes to get home.
Not knowing what to do I started walking the road that lead to my house, begging for time to pass by a little faster.
On my way home, I decided to go to Anna’s house. It’ll kill some time and I would also have the chance to tell her all about today. I already told her in the school cafeteria about meeting Dylan at the principal’s office today.
I knocked on the door and after a couple of seconds it creaked open.
“Hello Emily” I smiled at the 6 year old .She just smiled back innocently.
“Anna, Kelly’s here” she yelled to her older sister.
I sat with Anna in the living room watching her eyes widen in surprise as I told her about what happened today.
