Sonic

"So they like...kept you like a prisoner?" I asked.

At the moment I was seated on the bed while he sat at a chair nearby the bed.

"More like a hostage, there were no bars or a cage. And I was wrongfully accused." Shadow replied.

His eyes were closed as he sat with his arms crossed. The sunlight from the open window softly caressed his shiny ebony fur. I had to suppress myself from gulping down that something felt stuck in my throat. It was almost like the scene in front of me was suffocating yet I can't find myself to look away for breath.

"Yeah sorry about that," I said scratching at my quills. "It's just you know...its kind of like your thing to like destroy us? No offense though." I gave him a sheepish smile.

"Well if you and your friends aren't so annoying maybe I wouldn't have bothered to attempt ending your miserable lives in the past." Shadow's eyes shot open.

For a second there was a blinding red glint in his eyes. It was all because of the sunlight still silently draping its golden warmth on him. Wow, oh my, when did my thoughts become so poetic.

I was about to give him my reply when the door was slammed open. Knuckles came in with a huge smile on his face and...and some party hats on both of his hands. I shouldn't really be surprised about it. If anything I should be more surprised if he came in looking normal. He wasn't exactly holding onto the hats, they were rather literally put on like as if they were heads. Honestly, he looked like he had like those drills for hands. Reminding me of some of Eggman's robots.

"Sonic guess what?!" he shouted.

From the corner of my eye I saw Shadow roll his eyes. I flinched a bit from the loud volume of his voice.

"Knuckles, I–"

"Wrong!" he pointed a party hat at me and laughed.

"But I haven't even said anyth–"

"Nope! Wrong again!" he exclaimed happily.

I now gave him an unamused look but he didn't seem to get the hint at my annoyance.

"I'll tell you since you can't even guess it. Today is..." his smile faltered as the expression on his face turned from excited to confused. "Dang it! Now I forgot whatever today is there for today!" Knuckles said frustrated.

I looked at Knuckles then looked at Shadow. He had closed his eyes again. I think he felt my stare so he opened them and I could read from his expression that he looked like as if he was telling me this interaction right now was part of what we were discussing earlier.

"I need to retrace my steps! Maybe I can still find where I lost what today is today!" Knuckles said and carefully walked out, almost repeating every motion he did before he came in.

The door closed with him leaving Shadow and me alone again.

"That was not enough reason to murder me and my friends." I said turning back to him.

I expected a response that was either indifferent, or cold, or dismissive. But I did not expect Shadow would let out a smile, very small one, grace his face. Not a smirk or a grin, it wasn't anything mocking or unpleasant. The smile was genuine added by a trace of a faint chuckle. I nearly passed out from the sudden leap in my heart. If it felt like ready to burst out a while ago it now felt like punching its way out of my chest.
