"Brett, there is no way I can-" Eddy tried listening for the proper notes as they tried to get in a quick practice backstage.
A violins strings from lowest to highest are G, D, A, and E. For Viola it is C, G, D, and A. That wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't for the fact that Eddy's pinky would slip off the string every shift. His hands were still shaking from what had just happened to his violin.
At least let me grieve a minute. Ling-Ling have mercy.
Brett tried to stay supportive of Eddy but also new a rule for this performance. The show must go on. Brett knew Eddy did not want to let the audience down.
This meant being prepared and Eddy was not prepared to play viola tonight.
A basic rule in the music community is preparedness.
Practice.
What kind of hypocritical crap would it be if Eddy were to go on stage and just flunk.
"We could tell them what happened." Brett said, "They would understand. Doesn't mean we wouldn't do the show."
"The girl-" Eddy interrupted, "The girl that leant me this- does she know her dad."
"I didn't tell her." Brett said, "I didn't even think to- We just needed to get you an instrument."
"What if we got someone else's instrument? Fans bring them sometimes."
"I'll try it."
Before Eddy could give a other solution to their problem, Brett had left the backstage area and was passing the multiple curtains.
The cadence of screams told Eddy that Brett reached his destination. What was happening on stage was muffled to Eddy's ears but he could still sort of hear it.
"Well, this is a bit awkward to ask for but sometimes mishaps happen."
"Marry me, Brett!" Some random guy yelled in the audience.
There was some laughter and Eddy eased up. This was their Reddit audience, people who came to see them. Sure violinists were who they were but if any of these people wanted to see something professional, they would have gotten tickets to anything else.
Twoset Violin was about bringing the music community together. It was about fun and support.
These people didn't come for two people playing violin. They came for Brett and Eddy. Because Brett and Eddy had helped, inspired, or educated them in some way.
Plus they were really funny. Well they owe a lot of that to their editor.
Eddy adjusted his glasses a bit and carefully picked up his violin. Little bits of the blisters came off and rained onto the floor, like the violin was crying in pain.
"I have to show them." Eddy muttered,
Eddy was not perfect. He had perfect pitch but just like every musician, he knew he wasn't perfect. Which meant he would always grow. And what better way to show more of his growth to his audience than through a mistake.
Sure he kind of blamed the ladder guy. He had a massive grudge but the grudge was mainly on himself.
Brett saw Eddy in the wings before Eddy walked onto stage and instinctively, the audience started cheering again.
But when the broken violin made it's debut, the noise stopped.
Brett handed the mic he held to Eddy.
"Well, as you can see, my violin is broken. And it's something Olaf can't fix."
Why am I so nervous?
Maybe it was because the audience barely laughed at the joke and through the spotlight of looking at a sea of black shadows, Eddy could only see disapproving and horrified looks. Some thought he had done it deliberately.
"I put down my violin without thought of what was around." Eddy admitted, "And you know how its been getting hotter in here?"
"I'm hot for Brett!" Said the same guy who wanted to put a ring on it earlier.
"Well, who isn't?" Eddy joked back,
Immediately, a bunch of girls screamed.
"Anyway," Eddy said, "It's hot because- well some of you might of known this but the AC is not working. In fact we have a guy backstage who is on it right now. Anyway, I put my violin case next to the ladder that was being used. I guess the lesson is, don't put valuable things next to where accidents can happen."
There were a few awes, a few chuckles, but most importantly, no one looked disappointed in Eddy. It was a simple mistake.
Well, Eddy was still disappointed.
The two actually got a few audience members who volunteered their instrument.
Eddy played.
He was happy to play.
The tone was a lot brighter than what he was used to.
Eddy put on a fake smile. He wanted to go home.
