A/N: surprise chapter because why not :)
so my computer's hinge broke (cue me having to reuse a header image) and i had to write all this on my phone. idk what is up with my laptop, this is the second time that i've had to send it back to get it fixed and they just happened to not have the parts to fix it so they have to order more and ugh i miss my edith 🥺
boring computer talk aside, let's talk about this chapter! honestly speaking, i low-key want to do a mass update and post like three or four chapters at once, but i also don't want the book to be over so fast but i also wanna see you reactions...do you see my problem?
as promised, there's something of a plot twist in this chapter towards the end and after that...well, let's just just all hell is going to break loose ;)

"A nice dinner, few drinks, and then I'll pop the question."
————————————————————Later that night, when she finally made it back to the Tower, Adelaide was feeling the most miserable she had ever felt before.
The penthouse was dark. She assumed Pepper and Tony were already asleep. Adelaide sighed and dragged herself to the sofa. She fell into it, kicking off her shoes and letting the cushions hold her up. She leaned her head back to stare up at the dark ceiling.
A few hours ago, she had been wondering about what she would look like coming home from the dance.
She did not expect to feel so miserable. In her mind, the dance would have gone perfectly and she would have come home with a stupid smile on her face. She covered her face with her hands. This was not how tonight was supposed to end. God, why did she ever think telling Peter was a good idea?
You did the right thing, the sense in her reminded.
Adelaide had no choice but to admit that was true. Peter deserved to know. And she knew it was a lot, but why couldn't he have just held her in his arms and tell her it would be okay like he always did? That's what she needed right now. She needed him to be okay with her past. But then she realized that even she wasn't okay with her own past. Asking Peter to be over it so quickly wasn't fair.
She pulled his jacket around her closer, breathing it in. It smelled like him, his apartment, his cologne. She closed her eyes, feeling them burn.
I need some time to think about this.
She needed to give him some space and time. He would come around.
But if he didn't...
"Adelaide?" she heard Pepper say from behind. The teenager turned around. The woman was standing there in her pajamas, squinting.
"Hey, Pep," she whispered, "Did I wake you?"
"No, no, it's fine," she said, walking over to sit beside her. Adelaide stared at the ground. "How was the dance?"
"It was fine," she mumbled.
Pepper frowned.
"It really was. I had fun, just like you said," Adelaide said, forcing a smile at the end. She did have fun. Right up until the moment she had decided to tell Peter the truth. Pepper studied her face for a moment. There was something she wasn't telling her.
"Are you sure?" she asked. The question was obviously directed towards something other than the actual dance.
Adelaide wasn't sure if she had lost Peter already. She absentmindedly rubbed the material of his jacket with her thumb. All she knew was she had to give him time and just hope that he would come around. But the uncertainty of the whole situation was enough to make her want to throw her arms around the woman and sob into her shoulder until she ran out of tears. Instead, she swallowed hard and forced another smile.
