chapter eighteen

we had just got into the car, i was sitting in the back with pony and had just lit a cigarette. "where did you get this car?" pony asked dally. "it's bucks." dally responded and started driving down the road.

dally was probably the craziest fucking driver i knew, we had nearly crashed about a million times. we had ordered our food and had just pulled up into a parking spot. i threw my cigarette onto the ground and opened my burger, taking a bite of it. i looked over to ponyboy and johnny and they were both shoveling down their food. "you guys sure are hungry." i said and pony just shrugged before he went back to eating. "the kid you killed had plenty of friends." dally told johnny and i just looked out the window, there were kids everywhere, god i hate kids, i thought to myself before i took another bite of my burger. "it's all over town, 'soc against grase'" dally told the boys, it was true.

i had sort of stopped paying attention to what the boys where saying and focused on the cars that drove past us as i ate my burger. "do you have ten cents?" i heard a kid ask and i looked over to see a kid standing near the car. i looked over to the boys struggling, "i don't have any money man." dally said. "do you have a dime?" the girl said, now asking me. "no man. go away, we're busy here." i said as i looked away from her. "do you-" she started but dally cut her off. "go away! get out of here!" he told her and she walked away. "that was a close call." dally said as he took his sunglasses off.

he then went on to tell us that he had a "spy." it was cherry valance the redhead girl from the drive in. she testified that the socs' were drunk and that johnny and ponyboy had fought back in self defense. "i offered to take her for a coke, and she told me to go to hell." he told us. "so you think she might like me a little bit?" he asked. "i think she's kinda cute." dally said. "definitely." i sarcastically said.
