RAST APPEARED on the verge of soiling his trousers as he stood there, awaiting Sam's attack. "What are you waiting for? Attack him!" Ser Alliser's command resounded, but Rast stood frozen, unwilling to make a move. Ser Alliser shoved him roughly aside and turned his attention to Grenn. "You step in."
"Hit me. Go ahead, hit me!" Grenn tried to provoke Sam into attacking first, and as soon as Grenn felt a slight push, he theatrically stumbled backward. "I yield! Yield. Yield. I yield."
Jon seemed to find the spectacle amusing, a sentiment not shared by Ser Alliser. "Do you find this amusing?" he asked, looming over Jon. He then shifted his gaze to Isabelle and Jasmine, who were once again observing from the railings above. Before they could stand up and depart, he called out to them.
"You two, come down here," he gestured for them to join the men, and hesitantly, they complied.
"Give them swords," he commanded Grenn and Rast, who followed suit. Jasmine received Grenn's sword, while Isabelle was handed Rast's.
"Let's see if Lady Piggy can handle being bested by two young girls," Ser Alliser jeered, pushing Sam toward the twins. He clearly didn't anticipate the girls putting up a fight, let alone wielding swords.
Jasmine took the initiative, assuming a stance ready to counter attacks that never came. Her posture mirrored that of a seasoned warrior, leaving the men perplexed. "Are you going to attack, or not?" she asked Sam gently.
"Come on, we don't have all day long. Hit him," Ser Alliser ordered, but Jasmine wouldn't make the first move unless Sam did.
"Strike me," she urged, as the men observed.
"I can't attack a lady," Sam stammered, his voice shaky.
"Do you intend to be defeated by two ladies? Come on!" Ser Alliser's shout finally spurred Sam into action. He swung his sword at Jasmine, but her reflexes were quicker. The clash of steel resonated before Sam's sword clattered to the ground.
Isabelle picked up the sword and prepared to return it to Sam, but Ser Alliser intervened again. "Again!" This time, Sam refused to reclaim the sword.
"We won't fight a man who's unwilling to fight. That's not our way," Jasmine stated, handing Grenn back his sword. Ser Alliser didn't object this time, allowing the girls to walk away.
"When you're out beyond the Wall, with the sun setting, do you want a man by your side or a quivering boy?" his voice echoed after them.
Jon and Sam were assigned to guard the Wall that day. As they stood at the pinnacle of the world, Sam shed his fear, taking in the breathtaking landscape.
"Those two girls," Sam broke the silence. "Do you know them?"
"No," Jon replied.
"Why are they here?"
"They got lost beyond the Wall. They're waiting for an expedition to accompany them."
"I miss girls," Sam remarked unexpectedly, catching Jon off guard. "Not talking to them. I never really spoke to them. Just watching them, listening to their laughter. Don't you miss girls?"
Jon didn't have a chance to respond, his gaze drawn to movement in the distance. "Riders," he announced.
"Blow the horn. We need to sound the horn," Sam urged, rushing to obey.
"Why is he alone?" Jon pondered aloud.
"One blast for a returning ranger, two for wildlings, three for..." Sam recited his newly acquired knowledge.
