BEYOND THE WALL in the North, Samwell Tarly and Gilly led the way south towards Castle Black with Isabelle and four of Craster's daughters in tow. Isabelle hadn't seen Jasmine since their escape, and worry gnawed at her. She chided herself for not keeping a closer eye on her sister as they fled. Jasmine was right behind her, but she hadn't noticed her sister leaving her side until it was too late.Sam had been lost too, but they found him and Gilly, giving her hope that they would sooner or later find her twin. But now, the urge to go back for her consumed her.
"We're west of Castle Black, but the Nightfort's closest to us," Samwell explained to her and Gilly. "It was the first castle on the Wall. The Watch abandoned it during the reign of King Jaehaerys I. Too big, impossible to maintain. Other than Castle Black itself, the Nightfort's the perfect castle for us."
He continued, sharing the knowledge he had absorbed. "It's got a secret sally port, the Black Gate, as old as the Wall itself. No one's used it for centuries, most likely. It leads through the Wall right down into the Nightfort, if no one knows how to find it, which, just so happens, I do."
"How do you know all that?" Gilly asked, her confusion evident.
"I read about it in a very old book."
"You know all that from staring at marks on paper?"
"Yes."
"You're like a wizard."
"Perhaps I should go back," Isabelle interjected. "She's clearly not out here. She didn't even make it out."
"I saw her leave," Sam insisted. "She was behind us."
"Yes, she was behind us until she wasn't," Isabelle argued. "Whatever happened to the other women has happened to her."
"But we're already here," Sam said, stopping and pointing toward the wall. "Look."
"I can't leave her," Isabelle stated.
"You aren't," Sam tried to soothe her. "She is with Grenn and Edd, they'll keep her safe. Perhaps they are already in Castle Black waiting for us. We were slow."
Isabelle had played that scenario over and over again in her mind, considering every possibility. "You need to help me keep these women safe," Sam told her. "I can't do it on my own."
Her sister was far more important to her than any of these women, more important than Sam and his wildling lover. If only they had fled without wasting their time on them, she would still be with Jasmine now.
"Our father used to tell us that no wildling ever looked upon the Wall and lived," Gilly chimed in, seemingly carefree about the issue at hand. "Here we are. Alive."
✶
Jasmine awoke to the realization that she had been bound all night. Her hands were pulled up and tied, leaving bruises as she was forced up, standing all night. The world was still a bit blurry as she looked around, and she spotted Grenn and Edd tied beside her.
"You're awake," Edd grunted, his eyes fluttering open.
"What happened?" Jasmine asked them.
"You got knocked out after you tried to fight Rast off," Grenn told her.
That's when it struck her. She remembered the three women being dragged alongside her as the men surrounded them while Rast took charge of her. She had fought back, attempting to escape, striking out at him, kicking and scratching his face until he ultimately knocked her out.
