Part Five:
A Little House PartyI shouldn't have trusted him.
I should have stayed at home, bundled up under my covers watching a horror movie and drinking copious amounts of tea. But no. Here I am, at some strange house filled with people I don't really know but sort of recognise. Worst of all, they were all staring at me at I walked through the living room, side by side with Trevor Zegras, one of the most popular boys at Iona.
I clutched at the hem of my black denim overall dress. It was A-line and hugged my waist in a way that I enjoyed. Trevor had rolled his eyes upon seeing my outfit of choice for tonight--my dress, a white long sleeve shirt that was tight and shoulder-less and a pair of thick soled combat boots. The look he gave me upon picking me up was one that pierced anxiety through my veins, making me feel self conscious, although, I was probably judging him just as badly.
I looked down at the hand clasped securely around my own, gulping back my fears as he continued to drag me through the large, very oversized house. A pair of boys stumbled down the staircase, tumbling in a heap right in front of Trevor and I. He gripped my hand a little tighter, tugging me towards a hall to the left without a word.
I admired the way his waist moved as he walked, how could someone so . . . eh, have a body like that? It just wasn't fair. His legs looked beyond dreamy in a pair of black straight cut jeans and his arms were giving me head spins underneath his dark blue button down blouse, the sleeves rolled to his elbows like the perfect bachelor.
He was unfairly pretty.
We submerged the hallway into an open plan kitchen littered vastly with red plastic cups and bottles of who-even-knows-what. I subconsciously took a step closer to the taller boy, not wanting to lose him in the sea of people and be lost among a crowd of drunks. I don't do well in busy places as it is, I couldn't imagine being stuck here alone.
"Here," Trevor said, coming to an abrupt stop directly in front of the fridge. He pulled it open as though he'd been in the house a thousand times, which I somehow didn't doubt for a second. Glancing at him with curiosity, and just a little bit of fear, I watched as the senior boy pulled a pair of beers from the fridge, passing one of them to me like it was the normal thing to do. "Drink this. It'll ease your nerves."
"Nerves?" I asked, pretending to laugh as if nothing were wrong. I chewed on my bottom lip before letting my eyes flicker towards the busy outside alfresco. "I-I'm not nervous."
Trevor let out a bellowing laugh, lipping his head back and scrunching the corners of his eyes in delight. "Please, Milly, you're shaking like a leaf."
I pouted up at him. He returned the pout in a playful manner.
"Just . . . have a drink, and try to relax," he breathed, taking a step towards me while tipping his own beer into his mouth. "I'm not going to leave you by yourself here. I'll be right beside you the whole time. We're here to have a little fun, so you might as well try to enjoy yourself."
Taking a deep breath, I looked up at him through my lashes, thinking. He was right, I'd never been to a party before, so there was no way of telling if they were my scene or not since I'd never tried. Besides, maybe it would be fun? I glanced towards the bottle of alcohol in my hands, contemplating. Trevor was staring at me with this strange glint in his eyes that sort of worried me but I pushed it down quickly, not wanting to psyche myself out before I'd even tried the drink.
I tipped my head back, letting the rim of the bottle touch my lips lightly before letting some of the cool liquid drip down my throat as slowly as I could. Closing my eyes as tight as possible, I waited for the alcohol to burn my throat or fry my insides or for a coughing fit to happen. When I was sure that I wasn't going to die a sudden and horrific death, I peered one eye open, and then the other, realising with pleasant surprise that I didn't hate the bitter beverage.
