Damian woke up, shivering.
He was lying on a bed and was chained to it, unable to move.
"Where am I?" he murmured, letting out a breath of cold smoke.
"My house," a voice answered. Damian strained his head to see Mr. Freeze, tinkering with his gun.
"Let me go!" Damian thrashed around, only achieving bruising his wrists. The villain simply chuckled and said no more.
Damian tried again, "Why are you doing this to me?"
"I can spot heartbreak when I see someone who recently went through it." Mr. Freeze said, seemingly ignoring Damian's question, "I used to love someone, you know. Her name was Nora, and she was perfect in every way. But she had a sickness. MacGregor's Syndrome. It creates a fluid in the lungs, creating organ failure and breathing difficulties."
Damian stifled a gasp. He heard of MacGregor's Syndrome, and there were no survivors and no cure.
"So I thought the only way to save her was to freeze her for a little while. When she thawed out, she would be good as new. But when I finally developed the right concoction, she switched it up with a failed one, killing herself." Mr. Freeze finished the story.
"Why are you telling me this?" Damian said after a thoughtful pause.
Mr. Freeze looked at him, "Death is inevitable. Soon, the presence of someone you love turns into a memory, and you cannot freeze those memories forever."
Damian shivered, not because of the cold, because something clicked in his mind.
The past month, his family members would go up to his room and 'talk' to him. They would tell him stories about things they experienced and encounters, and what decision they made. Damian knew that these stories had a secret meaning behind them, because they wouldn't be wasting his time telling him useless stories. At first, Damian thought they were trying to get Jon and him back together.
Only now, he realized that they were trying to tell him it was important to forge ahead with new relationships and friendships, instead of mulling over what happened in the past.
Because Mr. Freeze was right. Sometimes it's too late.
Like now, Damian stopped fighting, dismayed, I didn't get to say sorry to Jon...
Mr. Freeze took his gun off the table and loomed over the trapped child, "Time to go." he said.
Damian looked the villain in the eye, then closed his eyes, accepting what was going to happen. He heard Mr. Freeze cock and aim his gun.
Goodbye, Jon.
Then, the roof exploded.
