Damian squeezed his eyes shut as rubble and wood fell from the ceiling.
What's happening? he thought warily. Again, he started to struggle. Hopefully, someone was coming to rescue him.
The cloud of dust disappeared and Damian saw Dick as Nightwing. He glanced at the person next to him. His hair was black and was messy. His eyes glowed red, and he wore an 'S' on his shirt and familiar ripped-up jeans.
Damian's heart lept.
Jon. He came from me.
And he's really angry.
"Give my ex-boyfriend back!" Jon yelled, blasting his heat vision at Freeze. The villain narrowly dodged, incinerating the area where he used to be. Without hesitation, Jon started battling Mr. Freeze, heat against ice.
Dick rushed over to Damian's side, took out a pocket knife, and started to cut Damian's binds. All Damian could do was watch his ex-boyfriend madly attack Mr. Freeze, and he was anxious to help.
"Can you saw through faster?" Damian snapped to his older brother.
"It's not as easy as it looks," Dick grunted, sawing harder. A few seconds later, Damian was on his feet.
"Hand me that knife," he said to Dick, opening his palm. His brother dropped the knife in his hand and took out his escrima sticks. Together, they charged, helping Jon force Mr. Freeze back.
The villain was no match for three skilled heroes, and got defeated. The heroes walked out of the house, triumphant, with handcuffs around Mr. Freeze's hands.
"Victor Fries," Dick grinned as he put on the handcuffs, "you are under arrest for the kidnapping of Damian Wayne." Slowly, he led Victor away, leaving Damian and Jon trailing behind him.
Damian supported Jon towards the door. Kryptonians may have almost-indestructible skin, but punches still hurt. He tripped over something hard and picked it up, realizing it was Mr. Freeze's gun.
"Here," Damian handed Jon the gun, "it's the least I can do to say thank you."
Jon accepted it, but only after asking, "Won't the authorities want it?"
Damian shook his head, "Keep it. Take it as an... early Christmas present.
"Oh. Thanks," Jon took the gun with two hands.
Dick turned around and told them, "You two stay here. I gotta hand Mr. Freeze over to the authorities so they can transport him back to Arkham Asylum."
The heroes nodded and watched as Nightwing walked off with Mr. Freeze. They made themselves comfortable by sitting on a bench that was on the sidewalk.
They stared at the sun as it started to fall, painting the sky orange.
"So..." Jon began, trying to break the silence, "Are we okay?"
The question hit Damian in surprise, but it was also the question he longed to hear, "Yeah. I'm sorry I didn't spend enough time with you back in Gotham. I knew that you just wanted to spend some time with me, but I don't know why I acted... like that."
Jon looked at him in surprise, "Whatever do you need to apologize for? I'm the one who should be sorry! I was bugging you while you were doing your work! I knew- know, that you're devoted to patrolling and I shouldn't have been looking for restaurants then."
Damian ducked his head, blushing, "Are we friends, or..."
"That breakup was kinda stupid, to be honest. It was probably the heat of the argument that led us to... separate," Jon said slowly, "but do you want to go back to what we were?"
Forgiving is better, Jason's voice echoed in his head.
Damian breathed in, "I'm not going back. I'm going to forge ahead, and I want you to be by my side. So what do you say, Jon?"
"Of course Dami!" Jon cried, hugging him, "I'll follow you anywhere."
And there they were, superheroes Robin and Superboy on a bench in Smalltown, watching the sunset.
Together.
