I was all alone in a white void. I glanced around. Where was I? How did I get here? Something moved in the corner of my eye, and I turned to stare wide-eyed at an enormous wolf with wings.
"I have been expecting you for some time now, Jasmine." Said the wolf, its piercing blue eyes mesmerizing me.
"How do you know my name?" I asked with a frown.
The wolf's eyes shined with sorrow, tilting its large head. "Do you not remember?"
My frown deepened. "Remember? Remember wha—?"
Flames roared around me. Glass exploded behind me. My gut-wrenching cry resonated in my lungs, the roar of the fire swallowing it along with my body. Burns. I burned. I burned.
I clutched my chest and fell to my knees with a wheezing gasp. "W-What is this? W-What's happening to me?"
The wolf met my confused gaze with sadness, placing its large paw on my shoulder with care. "You are remembering your last living moments. You are in the Void, the bridge between the Spirit and Physical Realm."
I froze, regaining my bearings and staggering upright. "I didn't make it out after all, did I?" I whispered more to myself than the wolf, "Is my brother alright? Is he alive?"
"Although I am not entrusted with his life, I can assure you that he is alive."
My shoulders slumped. "Oh, thank God," I furrowed my eyebrows. "Wait, if I'm dead and I'm crossing this bridge—"
"The Void," The wolf amended.
"If I'm crossing through the Void, then are you . . . Death?"
The wolf shook its head. Mild amusement twinkled in its beautiful blue eyes. "I am Aria of the Feral Spirits. We are Spirits that act as a guide to humans from the moment they come into existence to their ascendance into the Spirit Realm."
"You're my Feral," I concluded, seeing her nod. "But that doesn't explain why you're here."
Aria smiled, revealing rows of long, sharp teeth one would see on a wild animal, but Aria wasn't a wild animal. She was a guardian. My guardian. "I am here to offer you a chance to live again."
