Mateo's parents died when he was really young, so he was sent to an orphanage in the small city of Greyscale. There he met Omar, and the two quickly became best friends. When they turned 6, Mateo was adopted into a family, being forced to leave Omar behind. He promised his friend he'd come back for him, but quickly got over the loss and never fulfilled that promise. 12 years later, Mateo was 18, already owning his own apartment in Honeydale where his adopted family moved to with the foster brothers Seungho, Miguel, and Reza. One day he was coming home from the store and saw Omar on the side of the street. Turns out Omar had run away from the orphanage when he was 13 to look for Mateo, worrying that he might be hurt if he hadn't come back. Mateo let Omar stay in his apartment until just a few months later in the summer.
