♫♫ Let me Down Slowly by Alec Benjamin ♫♫
As they reach the table, Brooke looks around the coffee shop, taking in the warm atmosphere and the sound of the baristas preparing drinks. She notices that Clay looks a little older, his hair a little shorter and his face a little more worn than she remembers.
"I'll be right back I'm going to go order for us," Clay said setting down his wallet.
"You don't have to pay for me, I can pay for my own-"
"Brooke, just let me buy you coffee," Clay interrupted with a smile on his face the entire time.
"Fine," Brooke said laughing a little.
As Brooke waited for Clay to come back with their drinks, she looked around the coffee shop. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee filled the air, and the sound of the espresso machine echoed throughout the small space. She watched as people talked and laughed with their friends. The walls were lined with framed photographs of local artists. The shop was bustling with people typing on laptops, reading books, and chatting with friends. Brooke watched as a couple shared a croissant and a laugh while a group of students huddled together studying for exams. She felt a sense of peace as she observed the scene.
"Alrighty I got you a medium iced vanilla latte with an extra pump of vanilla and a butter croissant." Clay pushed the cup and the plate with the croissant on it toward Brooke.
"How did you know my order," Brooke asked.
"You're a creature of habit, I just assumed it was still your usual order. So- how are you? How's your family?" Clay asked, taking a sip from his cold brew. Family? How does he know about cove- wait he's talking about my mom.
"I'm doing alright, I finished up school last May, I have a job, a good home, a great dog. What more can a girl ask for? My dad passed away back in 2019, but it was time and it was good. Avery moved to Austin. My mom is up in Oregon still, she's had some health problems but she's been doing better, " Brooke smiled taking a sip of her latte.
