He was acting weirdly. That much was clear to everyone.

Even when Eren made a horse joke over dinner, instead of blowing up and falling into their usual argument, Jean remained silent, brushing Eren off and focusing his intense gaze back to his food. Concerned looks were shared amongst the group of friends, and Eren mouthed to [Name], “What’s wrong with Jean?”

Shrugging her shoulders, she turned to the copper-haired boy beside her, placing a hand on his arm gently, stopping him from further mutilating his nearly untouched food.

“Hey, are you alright?” She asked quietly, apprehension visible on her countenance.

His eyes softened when he saw the worry in her [e/c] eyes, and he gave her a tight smile in a futile attempt to calm her nerves. “I’m fine.”

Gazes pierced through him, and he looked up to see all their friends listening in to their hushed exchange. Jean sighed and stood up. Turning to [Name], he said before she could utter a word of protest, “Don’t worry about me, [Name]. I just… need some time to think.”

“See you tomorrow guys.” He deadpanned, taking his uneaten dinner and walking off.

As soon as Jean was out of earshot, the gang started bombarding [Name] with questions, asking her what was going on with him. The feeling of helplessness bubbled within her, the uneasy sensation growing as she watched Jean head out of the cafeteria.

“I don’t know, okay? He was like this since the start of the day and he doesn’t even want to talk to me about this!” [Name] cried out, effectively shutting everyone up as she pressed her face into her hands, elbows propped onto the dining table.

“He’s your boyfriend, isn’t he? How can you- ouch!” Ymir was cut off when Krista elbowed her side, giving her a sharp look to get the brunette to stop talking.

“Erm guys… I think I know why Jean is acting this way…” Armin muttered. “It’s exactly a month since the Battle of Trost, so maybe...”

“Marco…” [Name] breathed out. Armin nodded, and a solemn atmosphere filled the air as everyone grew silent at the memory of their fallen, freckled comrade.

The mounting tension was nearly palpable, and Connie piped up, “A month has passed so quickly eh?”

[Name] shot Connie a small smile, grateful for his attempt to lighten the mood. “It really has… It seemed like only yesterday that we were training under Shadis, and now we’re already in the Survey Corps.”

With her chair scraping against the wooden floorboards, [Name] stood up, a determined glint in her eyes. “I’m going to look for Jean. No way am I letting that stubborn horseface go through this alone.”

She found him near the training grounds, lying on the grass with his hands beneath his head, his eyes staring blankly up at the night sky. If he noticed her approaching, he gave no hint of response. Even when she sat herself down beside him, he showed no reaction. They just sat there, watching as the stars, which were peppered all over the sky, shined over them like tiny glimmering gems. But when the silence stretched over a few minutes, she spoke up, “You’re thinking about Marco, aren’t you?”

The way he flinched was all the confirmation she needed, and she said thoughtfully, “Sometimes, I like to think that his soul turned into a star, and whenever I look at the twinkling stars, I’d imagine that he’s watching over me, giving me that kind smile he always wears.”

Jean closed his eyes, letting out an inaudible sigh. “That sounds like Marco alright, watching over people; always too kind for his own good.”

Her lips curved upwards in the tiniest of smiles, as her eyes clouded as she reminisced the days when Marco was still alive. “Do you remember the time we tried to count Marco’s freckles?”

A short chuckle escaped Jean’s chest. “He was so flustered because of how close our faces were to his. His expression was so priceless.”

“And everyone thought you guys were gay for each other and started shipping the two of you together!” [Name] giggled, and when she saw Jean shooting her a glare, she burst out laughing, letting out a yelp as Jean sat up and poked her side.

“You’re probably the only girl in the world who would ship her boyfriend with another guy…” Jean huffed out.

Linking her arm with his, she faced him with a wide smile, pleased that she managed to induce a normal reaction from him. “Aw, don’t be upset Jean! I know you’d turn straight for me!”

“Urgh, shut up, [Nickname]…” Amusement laced his tone as he looked down at her, before his expression turned serene once again.

Looking out at the horizon, Jean whispered, “He was my best friend…”

“And he always will be.” Putting a hand over his heart, she said softly, “In here.”

His eyes were fixated onto her, a wave of unspoken emotions present in the ember hues as he took her hand in his and laced their fingers together. “Thank you, [Name]…”

“You have no idea how grateful I am that I still have you with me. Marco might be dead, but as you said, he’ll always be here in our hearts… And as long as you’re right here by my side, I know I will be able to fight on, no matter what may happen in the future.”

Cupping his cheeks with her free hand, she guided his face closer to hers till their foreheads were pressed against each other, their lips almost touching.

“I always be with you, Jean.” She murmured, before sealing her promise with a kiss.
