A/N: This is a songfic based the Mandarin song, 没那么简单 (Not That Simple). I did the translation myself, so please forgive me if I've gotten anything wrong! My parents and I really love this song, so this fic holds a special place in my heart ;u;

Listen to the song by the side~~

Soft thuds of her own dragging footsteps echoed in the empty corridor as [Name] made her way to the bedroom, letting her exhausted body fall backwards into the soft embrace of the plush sheets. Silence engulfed the room, drowning her in its deafening waves, causing her to retreat back into the sanctuary of her own mind. Yet, there was no escape from the feelings which threatened to overwhelm her, as the thoughts of a person long gone surfaced in her head.

Pulling the covers over her body, she shut her eyes, simultaneously letting out a deep sigh. Counting her own breaths, she slowly let herself fall asleep, succumbing to the onslaught of emotions which she had kept bottled up for weeks. Perhaps she could once more indulge in his presence, even though the only moments she'll ever spend with him again - would be in her dreams.

没那么简单 就能去爱 别的全不看
It's not that simple
to fall in love, not caring about anything else

Levi was the last person who she thought she'd end up with.

He was impolite, rude and ungentlemanly, just to name a few. Everything about him, all the way down to his height, was nothing like the person [Name] thought she would marry when she grew up. But of course, love never seems to go the way we want it to. The flaws she once found so frustrating, soon grew endearing and she learnt to accept and love him the way he was. Their relationship was not one any girl would crave for. It was nothing like what was portrayed in the movies, with romantic confessions and elaborate gifts. And she wouldn't have had it any other way.

The subtle feelings they bore to each other was deeper than anything words could describe.

How could he commit knowing he was in the military? He didn't plan to. After all, he had spent a good majority of his life without a lover. But as he looked at her, never faltering, never wavering as she stood by him through thick and thin; he thought maybe things would turn out well.

相爱没有那么容易 每个人有他的脾气
过了爱作梦的年纪 轰轰烈烈不如平静
It's not that simple to love,
since everyone has their own temper and personalities
After the age where we loved to dream
Instead of all the extravagance, can't we just have peace

For a long time, things went really well. Whenever Levi wasn't posted elsewhere for work, they'd spend their time together in their house, occasionally going out for dates. Life was simple...peaceful, and it was all the both of them asked for. Each time Levi had to leave to fight for the country, there was always a chance he'd lose his life on the frontlines. Countless soldiers had died, sacrificing themselves on the foreign land, and being a captain himself, he had seen many of his comrades and subordinates slain before his eyes. Every time he returned safely was a miracle, and [Name] was always there to support him, sharing his emotional burden and helping him recover from the terrors of war.

Even as he slept, he would always be on guard, with a slight crease between his brows. Even the lightest of touches would cause his eyes to shoot open, his steel gaze piercing cold as he looked for danger, only to land his gaze on the sadden visage of [Name].

"You're safe here," she would whisper, pushing his raven colored locks out of his face.

"I know." Tugging her close to his side, Levi breathed in the calming scent of her shampoo and murmured against her hair, "They're going to deploy me any day now."

Silence befell upon them, but before it had a chance to turn ominous, she nuzzled closer to him. "Come back home, Levi."

"I'll try."

幸福没有那么容易 才会特别让人着迷
什么都不懂的年纪 曾经最掏心 所以最开心 曾经
It's not that simple to find happiness
perhaps that's why people are especially fascinated by it
Our years of ignorance
where we were devoted, was thus the happiest times
that is all in the past

There was a slight bounce in her step as she made her way home, a bright smile plastered on her face as happiness radiated off of her. How should she break the news to him when he came back? How would he react to such a huge announcement? He'd probably freak out or something. Her footsteps faltered, and the smile on her face faded as she caught sight of a white rose atop a single letter on her doorstep.

'Mrs [Name] Ackerman'

Her fingers were trembling and her breathing became shallow as she tore open the envelope, carefully unfolding the crisp white letter within. Scanning the contents of the letter, her heart plummeted and a sob escaped her throat as she broke down in tears.

...he would never come home again...

...he would never come back to her...

...he would never meet their unborn child...

He was gone.

想念最伤心 但却最动心 的记忆
It's heartbreaking to reminisce
yet, these are the most heartwarming memories

[Name]'s eyelids fluttered open as she woke up. Sunlight filtered through the velveteen curtains, shining down onto one side of the bed which lay empty. She could picture him lying there beside her, but as she looked to his side of the bed, her fingertips grazed his pillow, as she remembered the dream she just had. The details were starting to slip from her mind, but she could clearly remember Levi being there, and the immense feeling of happiness within her. The last thing she remembered was him tenderly placing a hand on her stomach as he smiled at her. A radiant smile that lit up even his marble grey eyes.

The lingering feeling of his touch still remained as she brought her own palm to her small baby bump, knowing for sure that Levi would have been happy to be a father. It was not that simple to fall in love, or be happy. But with him, she found what people could only dream of finding.

She would always remember the memories they made together, and no matter what, he'd always be with her, every step along the way; watching over his family.
