prompt ? || everyone in the world has a certain color that glows around them, determining their soulmate. soulmates share the same exact shade/color and once they find each other the color fades, little by little. or, if one of them dies, the color also just disappears.
———
You're twenty one, a British office worker, living alone in your apartment with your dog, Dahlia, and have a ninety percent certainty you'll never meet your soulmate.
The warm yellow glow that surrounds you day after day has led to many false hopes, many breakdowns, and even a lifetime of searching just to tell you that it's basically flawed. By now you're just waiting for the color to die out- as it does when your soulmate dies.
And now, sitting at a small café in London, sipping coffee, you realize how stupid you're acting. Sure, maybe you haven't found your soulmate yet, but that doesn't mean you won't at all. It's not like yellow was a very common color- one of the more rare ones- and there were a lot of people living on the planet.
Biting your lip, you remember your moms words as you had woke up with a yellow glow around you on your fourteenth birthday.
"There's no place for a yellow in this family. The worst thing you could do would be to not find your soulmate and die a widow, and bring dishonor on us." Your whole family was a collection of reds, and definitely not open to any other color. Kicked out at the age of sixteen, you had ditched the idea of family and felt sorry for whatever poor soul ended up with you.
"Want another croissant?" Erin, a waitress and close friend to you, offered the steaming plate and gave you a flattering smile.
"No, but I do have something I need. Care to sit down?" You gesture at the chair across from you, and Erin sits down, the plate sliding to the middle of the table.
"What's up?"
"How did you find your soulmate?" You sighed, twirling the straw in your coffee. Erin raised her eyebrows, taking her own croissant and biting into it thoughtfully.
"Well, when I met Casie, we were both in a park. And I guess it just happened because it was meant to be." Erin shrugged, her eyes lighting up when she talked about Casie, her girlfriend. Erin didn't have any more of her original light blue glow- it was all gone now.
"So just.. wait for them?"
"I guess so. Unless you're really that desperate, I'm sure there's some kind of website or app that would help." Erin stood up and grabbed the plate. "Gotta get back to work, but good luck with your search, hon. I know it means a lot to you." And with that, she was gone.
Leaving the café, you scrolled through Twitter while walking down the sidewalk. It was only eight in the morning, a slight bit of rain lazily drifting down, and you had an hour to get to the office. Not many people were out and about, but that didn't stop you from keeping a low profile and trying to tone down your glow by forcing yourself to be less in the romantic mood. Too engrossed in Twitter and your glow, you barely realized when you slammed into another person.
Tripping, you started plummeting towards the concrete. A foot from the ground, something caught you, pulling you up and asking if you were okay.
A man, tall and slender with a mop of brown curls on his head, glasses resting on the bridge of his nose, was holding onto your arm. A look of concern spread through his chocolate eyes, but you barely noticed.
All you saw was the glow that surrounded both of you, the exact same color, not knowing where it started or ended.
"Holy sh*t.. he's hot."

Standing in the frame of a bakery patio, you take a deep look at your soulmate. He was also looking at you, clearly also surprised.
"Wilbur, right?" You clear your throat, trying to draw your eyes away from him but ultimately failing.
"Yeah. Y/N, right?" You give a slight nod, your brain going a hundred miles an hour.
"Where do we start..?" Coughing in a slight nervous chuckle, you adjust your coat. He bit his lip, rubbing the back of his neck.
"Uh, well, I guess the basics?" Pausing, he thought for a second before smoothing it out. "I'm twenty five, a musician, twitch streamer slash YouTuber, and.. I live in London."
"Twitch streamer?"
"Minecraft. Dream SMP."
"What?"
"Ah, never mind."
You narrow your eyes, thinking. Shaking your head a little, you think of yourself. Shockingly, you didn't do that much.
"Uh, I'm twenty one, office worker for a toothbrush company, coffee enthusiast, and I also live in London. With my dog, Dahlia." You crack a smile, thinking how absolutely dumb both of you sound.
"Coffee enthusiast? We may or may not get along." Wilbur adjusted his glasses before grinning at you.
"Ay, at least I don't socialize with pixels."
"I used to run a country, toothbrush woman."
"Used to?"
"Long story."
"Well that's a great way to start off a relationship." You chuckled, checking your watch. "Sh*t, I have to be at work in a quarter hour. Got a phone number or something?" Wilbur nods, giving you the number and taking yours as well. "Pleasure meeting you, by the way. I've been searching for you for a while."
"Me too." Wilbur smiled. You were about to speed off, but he grabbed your wrist. "How about a date? Tonight, if you're free?"
"Of course. See you then, Wilbur Soot."
"See you then, toothbrush lady."
