"New case." Niki strides into your office with a fresh file, planting it on your desk before collapsing into the chair by the fireplace.

You look up from your computer, where you were filing a report for a man in a pig costume burning down an orphanage- weird, but oddly true- and took the file. It held barely any weight, and when you opened it, you couldn't stop your eyebrows from raising.

"This is what Manifold wants us to work with?" You throw the file onto your desk with a sigh, leaning forward to read the little amount of information that's listed.

"Well we are the best of the best." Niki smirks, quoting one of Jack Manifold's favorite lines. He ran this operation, but never seemed to actually help. It was a fair balance, clearly.

"Clay D. No pictures, because he hides his face with a smile mask. Goes by Dream. Guilty for killing an elderly man known as Mr. Jacobs Windova, who apparently insulted his friend, though there is no proof." You read it off to Niki, who sighs half heartedly. "Does Manifold have tabs on this friend? Or even know who he is?"

"Tub- I mean Officer Smith- was the one to give me the files. He never mentioned a friend, though he has been busy on the Halo case." Niki shakes her head, adjusting her glasses and tapping her heel on the wooden floor.

"This is a great lead," you groan, "might make the paper next year if we're fast."

"Don't be hard on him, he's been stressed over that case for years." Niki sympathizes.

"So he wants to drag us down with him? And isn't Halo already dead?" The Halo case was a peculiar one as well. A couple of years ago, some man went insane and killed his family one by one, going by Halo. He lurked in the shadows of every street, said to have luminous, dead eyes that shimmered like glistening blood.

The school had to shut down for a week until he was proclaimed dead. But Officer Smith was still hanging on to the thread that he might still be out there; you don't really see the appeal.

"Let's get back to the task at hand. Our mystery man was last spotted at this address a couple days ago, want to go up and have a look-see tomorrow?" Niki points to a quickly scribbled out note at the top of the paper.

"Sure. Let's kick some ass."

"I'd leave if I were you," a voice chants from behind you, making you swing around with your gun pointed right in between the eyes of a white smile mask.

"Where's Niki." You firmly speak, knowing that he's got information and your partner locked under wraps. It's been hours since you last seen her, and the three gunshots- a signal to get out- hadn't summoned her to leave the abandoned house. So you came in.

"That pink haired officer?" The man chuckles at you, and your jaw locks in place. "You don't want to know what I did to her."

With that, a terrified scream, hauntingly sounding like your partners', rattles through the walls and floor. Dream watches your eyes flash with panic before relaxing into that calm face you'd mastered since kindergarten.

"If that was Niki, you'd better be running within the next five seconds."

"And why would I do that when my next victim's right here?" His optimistic voice runs cold ice down your spine, and you grip the gun even tighter. You'd shoot if he didn't have Niki to pay the price with.

"Are you gonna kill me then, Dream?" You smirk, somehow feeling unsettled by the fact of death.

"Now that you've suggested it.. it would only be rude to disobey orders from a lady." In a flash he's holding a knife against your neck, pinned against the wall and the gun dropping out of your hand. The sharpened edge of the blade is digging into your skin, making you gag and feel light headed as blood drips down your neck aimlessly.

Right before your vision turns black, he releases the blade and you gasp for air. Falling onto the cool concrete, you clutch onto it like it's the last thing you'll ever remember.

"So.. how about we light some things up?" He smirks as he pulls out a lighter, waving the small killer in front of your face as a taunt. Starting off with a hot bang, Dream lowers the fire to your wrists, pressing the flames against your skin. Screaming in agony, you try to struggle, but he's got a sturdy arm over your body and the energy is already draining from your system.

When the burns become almost insufferable, Dream cackles like a maniac and brings the flame away. You didn't realize, but the salty tang of tears is seeping into your mouth.

"Good luck with what I'm about to pull, sweetie. If you'll even be able to feel it." He hesitates briefly, staring at the caged yet deadly fire like it was a piece of art. "Any last words, officer?"

"You- you won't.. get away- away with this." You rasp, realizing that you had called the rest of your team to get Dream before you actually entered the building, just in case.

Now all you had to do was bide your time and hope Niki stayed safe.

"Oh I will, love. I always do." You almost smile at yourself dumbly, knowing he doesn't have a clue what's going on.

That smile erases from your memory as he takes a long, excruciatingly long slit through your neck, almost killing you on spot.

"Bye bye love, sorry you had to go this way. Truly." He lifts the lighter to the wound in your neck, letting all nine circles of hell erupt in your throat.

As the dark creeps in, you can hear the police sirens and Niki's pitiful shrieks.

Hopefully she'll be okay.
