"YOU GUYS DIDN'T DO ANYTHING YET?!"
Amari-san's voice shouted in an exasperated tone, mingled with the static of the little sound box on my pastel pink flip phone.
"I still don't understand your reasoning, Amari-san..."
I said, sighing to my friend on the other end of the line. When was it ever going to get through to her that Nishinoya-san and I's relationship wasn't like that at all?
Oh, I forgot to explain.
Amari-san thinks I'm in love with Nishinoya-san.
Yes, she believes it's "meant to be" and "opposites attract" "fate brought you two together", everything along those cheesy and sappy lines. It was devastating for me- because every time we met or talked on the phone, I had to deal with the barrage of irrelevant questions about our "love life". Absolutely appalling. Just because the libero and I were together every day coincidentally didn't mean we had any special feelings for each other- or so I would hope.
I definitely didn't.I turned my half-lidded black eyes towards a Nishinoya-san diligently receiving spikes from his orange-haired kouhai outside in the humid and sunny weather.
Yeah,
I definitely, definitely didn't."Nakemura-san? You still there?"
Amari-san snapped me back to my senses after my little flashback.
"Y-yes. I'm sorry. But no, for the many times I've said it before, we are not an 'item'. I don't think things like that work out as well as you would believe them to, or in that case, I just don't understand it."
I stated absentmindedly, getting lost in the pink haze of the Sakura petals gently floating around and over me, the tiny blossoms leaving the huge branches of their tree. I was lucky to find such a huge shade within the barren area, conveniently close to the outdoor place where Karasuno insisted on practicing so dreadfully early in the morning.
"You're no fun, Nakemura-saaan~. Being so painfully honest is not cute at all!"
The blonde-haired girl scolded me over the phone.
"It seems Nishinoya-san would be a better match for you than I would, really..."
I grumbled frustratingly.
"What? Did you say something?"
"Sorry. It w-"
"YO, YUMIKO-CHAN! WHAT'S UP?!"
Before I could react, my flip phone was ripped away from my ear and taken into the hands of another who was close by me, not exactly taking it all out of my cold fingers at once. Instead, the sweaty surface of his skin collided with mine that was intertwined on the base of my phone.
"NISHINOYA-SAN! HOW ARE YOU?! IT'S BEEN SO LONG!"
A voice with an equal amount of enthusiasm responded to the volleyball player's message.
"H-how did you get so stealthy?! Give it back, you ignorant libero!"
I shouted, trying to pry the lanky boy's hand off of mine and my cellphone's in a pathetic attempt.
"No! I want to talk to Yumiko-chan!"
"Nobody cares about your selfish needs! Let go alreadyyyy!!"
"SO MUCH ACTIVITY SO EARLY IN THE MORNING, EEEEH?~"
Amari-san's voice emerged from the quarrel between Nishinoya-san and I. The sentence made me scoff and finally pry the libero's sweaty palms off of the phone with an annoyed and furious force.
"You're so mean, Nakmeura-san...."
The volleyball player pouted and walked off with his head down, the sun consuming him back into the light.
Not that he didn't shine just as bright in the shade. Or anywhere else.
