I stopped dead in my tracks as I felt my heart begin to race. I cautiously turned, letting my hair flip around to be met with the kindest eyes I have ever seen. They're the color of butterscotch with a ring of dark brown around the iris. His hair is fluffy and the color of freshly popped popcorn. I realized I had been staring at him for who knows how long and popped back into reality. I gave him a warm smile and prayed my face wasn't bright red even though I knew it most definitely was.
"H- hi. I'm Carson." The boy said nervously
"I'm Courtney." I replied softly
As if a voice in both of our heads told us to snap out of it, we both straightened our posture and expressions simultaneously. I began to rock back and forth on my heels again as a wave of awkwardness hit the two of us.
"We should probably get out of the classroom." I muttered
"Yeah, good idea." Carson said, shoving his hands into his pockets
We walked out of the classroom and stood against lockers silently before we both spoke up at the same time.
"What cl-"I said
"Where ar-" Carson said
"You go first." I said
"Where are you going next?" Carson finished
"Oh, um, PE I think." I replied "You?
"Actually, I'm going there too! Want me to take you to the coach so you can find out what you need to do?" Carson asked
"Yeah, I'd love that." I answered, a small smile on my face.
We walked through the busy halls, making small talk and getting to know each other a bit more. I found that Carson is on the football team and has two younger siblings. He found all my lies which have been scripted. I told him my dad was divorced and took custody of me (lie) and he got a job here in Edgewater (partial lie) and we came here from Omaha (lie). I also mentioned something about what I called 'my secret love affair with broadway' (pretty well true) and he found it very funny. When he laughed at a stupid comment I made, I felt tons of butterflies appear in my stomach. I tried my hardest to not let my blush show in front of Carson and the rest of the students. We made it into the gym office and Carson introduced me to the coach. Luckily, it's a girl so I don't have to deal with aggressive men. She gave me my locker and explained to me what we're doing today. I thanked her and changed into my gym clothes. I walked out and looked for Carson, but instead I found Emma.
I smiled and waved at Emma, jogging towards her. The two of us talked for a while before we heard coach blow her whistle. We started our work out for the day and I met up with Carson so we could do our crunches together. We each did three sets of fifteen before pausing to take a water break. During that break, I looked up to see a group of girls throwing balls at someone. After a bit of watching, I noticed the girl they were throwing balls at is Emma. I stood up, breaking my conversation with Carson and sped over to the group. I jumped in front of Emma just in time for a ball to strike me square in the face.
"What the hell?" One of the girls exclaimed
"Courtney, what're you doing?" Emma asked
"Standing up for you. Now grab those balls and throw them at the girls." I replied seriously
"What? Seriously?" Emma replied
"Yes. You have to stop letting them shoot you down. Now help me." I said, picking up a ball and chucking it at the group of girls.Emma smiled and joined me in throwing the balls. Eventually they all scattered. I high-fived Emma and walked back over to Carson. I smirked at him and he gave me a nervous smile as I sat next to him on the bleachers.
