Swift Grace (#2 in the Golden series)

Chapter Two: Pack

My eyes sting, my breathing is shallow and my heart is broken. "Mum" I gasp as I sit up. My side throbs and my skin tingles, I growl while still trying to sit and the memories swirl in my head. I cry out in pain when I try to get out of the bed.

"hey it's ok" A girl says walking up to me.

I growl and try to fight her "Easy I'm only seven" She says. I study her, her bright blue eyes shimmer in the light and her long black hair shows hints of her alpha wolf as well.

"Who are you?" I ask instantly feeling calm around her.

"I'm Hunter aka Kate but no one calls that any more"She replies while rolling her eyes at something only she gets.

Tilting my head I say "I'm kay and good for you but why are you here?"

She laughs at my tone, trying to be firm but failing, she stops and says "Toby sent me, if it's ok with you, he wants you to be part of our pack. I stare at her for ages.

I look into her eyes and see all the horrors she is trying to hide. I don't know what makes me say yes but I do.

"Yay, I'll send my twin to say hi" she giggles while running out of the room.

I chuckle to myself, then remember I should not be laughing when my family is dead because of me.

She leaves me to the mercy of the beeping machines, my sense of smell picks up three werewolves outside my door. I growl but stay still, the door opens and the wolves smile.

"I'm Toby" The leader says, I study him. His short dirty blonde hair hangs to one side, his eyes are golden and he is about sixteen.

"Kay" I reply simply

"This is Jay and Jet" He says nodding to a dark brown haired first, then to the jet black haired.

"Hi" I say. They nod to me and I start to relax and I know they're  not out to kill me... I think.

"I want you to come and live with us for now" Toby says, more like a commands.

I look around and notice a new arrival, putting my wolf aside I ask Toby's request "Why can't I just go?".

The new comer shakes his head, telling me to say yes. "Because there are hunters on your trail, if you want to live then I suggest you say yes" He says.

"Fine, if it makes you people happy. What makes you think I want to live anyway, let the hunters tear me to pieces" I growl.

Toby's eyes widen but he stands his ground. "OK fine but I won't let you die, so go on just walk out, lets see if you can survive long enough for my team to save you" He growls back.

"OK" I say, raising up to his challenge.

I grab my clothes and head for the toilet, my whole body still hurts but I don't care. I want to prove I can defend myself. After I'm dressed, I walk out of the hospital.

I can do this I think, I walk along the peaceful road, along my street. Suddenly I hear tyres squealing against the road, turning round I'm hit.

I fall to the floor, I jump up even faster, ready to defend myself. "Get him" I hear someone shout and I shift into a fighting stance.

Hunters attack from all angles and I fight them all, somewhere in the battle, Toby and the rest come and help me. Toby looks pissed but still helps me.

I yelp when a bullet hits my leg, it buckles and I fall to the floor. "Protect him" Toby shouts as more hunters arrive.

Fire runs up my leg, I grit my teeth and stand, a hunter jumps at me and I duck. I begin fighting again and soon all the hunters are either dead or badly wounded.

"Now will you be part of my pack" Toby asks me, I tilt my head and think about it.

"OK but I want to fight more hunters" I reply with a sheepish grin.

He nods and we all settle in his car. "Lets all go home" He says and I'm pulled into a dreamless sleep.
